Keeping the list on-topic

Just a quick reminder that this is a list for discussing Internet operations. Topics that don't have to do with Internet operations should be discussed elsewhere. Operational topics might include how to provide connectivity to networks in China (although that could arguably fall outside the North American part of the list name), how to provide or restore connectivity to hurricane damaged regions, and how to connect to Google, as well as all sorts of other operational topics that we're hopefully all familiar with. Non-operational topics, which may be important but should be discussed elsewhere, include civil rights in China, charity fundraising, and Google's hiring practices (unless there end up being so many network operators working for Google that there's nobody left to operate the rest of the Internet...). That somebody else is posting off-topic stuff doesn't mean you should too, even if they're blatantly wrong about civil rights in China, or who works for Google, or whether their non-profit needs money, and even if that makes you angry. Please exercise a bit of self-control. Your fellow list members will appreciate it, as will the list administrators. Thanks, Steve Gibbard NANOG List Administration Group

Off topic (new Win2k dos?)

I have two machines within my network with similar configurations.. Windows 2000 Server SP4 with latest updates from Microsoft Updates. They are both behind dedicated (which means each server has its own Firewall) Watchguard Firebox III. Only 3389 (terminal services) web ftp, and the like are open. Services such as 445, 135-139 and the common virii spreading/Trojan spreading ports are not open on these servers. Tonight on two separate occasions I have had to reboot these servers after having them both run flawlessly for months without having to reboot them except for update purposes. Now, having to reboot one of them, I could see. Having to reboot two of them.. that's a little strange.. Anyone hear of anything new going around? I haven't heard of anything on regular sec focus yet. These servers aren't connected to a DC or anything. No need to reply if you haven't noticed anything unusual. Thanks, -Drew

Way OT, but very interesting- don't know if anyone saw this article about Yahoo collaborating with the Chinese government's police (from the BBC): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4221538.stm If this is true, I for one will stop using Yahoo- I have spent alot of time in Asia myself, and I am very aware of the nature of the Chinese secret police. But if the article is true, I guess Yahoo doesn't care about the opinion of the regular consumer when they can curry favor with a repressive regime by informing on people. So, if you email friends in China from a Yahoo account, you have been warned!

Katrina Relief

I know this is not the proper place to advertise, but in this situation I hope all of you can understand. This list is a great tool to get information out to the core of the communications industry. I would be foolish not to tap it as a resource for assistance in this disaster. Feel free to kick me off if you need to. I have worked in the communications industry for aprox. 13 years. I know what people in this industry can do when they combine their talents. I am running the communications for a non-profit organization in Johnson Bayou Louisiana. (Please feel free to verify) I ask that you visit www.itcouldhavebeenus.com and help me spread the word. My home is only 1 mile from the Gulf of Mexico and only 200mi from New Orleans. The tragedy that the people of New Orleans are dealing with is one that I or my children WILL have to face at some point. The people of Cameron Parish Louisiana are trying to help in any way possible. Since last Tuesday I and several others working in our relief effort have tried reaching the Federal and State resources that our tax dollars pay for. I'm sure it will not surprise you to know that we have yet to reach ANYONE that can give us REAL help! Organizations like ours are towing the line for these political do nothings. I understand that they have their hands full, but it isn't helping us take care of the 300 plus evacuees we are helping. (More coming) This disaster will take years to manage.
