Here is AT&T's official media statement. While technically correct, omits some information. FOR RELEASE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 Media Advisory On AT&T Network AT&T reports there is no damage to its long distance network as a result of todays emergency situation in New York City and Washington D.C. However, as a result of the emergency situation, there is higher than normal calling volume into the affected areas. To ensure ample network capacity for emergency calls in the affected areas, AT&T recommends that customers not call New York City or Washington D.C.

Tropical storm Gabrielle hit florida this evening near Venice, FL. According to news reports approximately 500,000 people are without power. Additional people may lose power as the storm cross the state. Florida Power Corp estimates it will be late Saturday before power is restored.

Ladies and gentlemen, I've been lurking around reading all these 'love the planet' emails, and I have to agree...killing is surely not the answer - but if you gave me an unlimited supply of rockets, and a lot of killing power, I'd point it at Afganistan and say....'Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out later".......just my two cents...I had a friend who left his wife a message seconds before he died up there in south tower..."Honey, I'm on the 92nd floor and am not going to make it back to your arms alive - remember I will always love you" -then the line went dead....those words ring through my head over and over and over - I could have been there, so could you. True, there is no taking back what happened, but if GW issued an act of war, and did some re-arranging of the middle-east and the like, and places like Afganistan, Iraq, and the Palestinian militant states DISAPPEARED forever - no one, especially this blue-blooded American would shed a tear...and I as one...would see all the psycho-terrorists to hell. I have doubts that they were referring to a 5E. Optical muxes, and passive optical feeds just passing through, maybe. The node in this case is the old Teleport Communications Group main node that became ATT/Local Network Services when they were acquired. I posted about this here in NANOG two days ago. It is six levels down and amply fitted with backup battery plant to sustain long outages, and was conceivably insulated enough to resist the turmoil above for six hours of continued service. More power issues affect more carriers

Power is a continuing issue in lower Manhattan. Several locations are still on generator. ConEdision is working with some folks on fuel deliveries and even loaning generators. According to "The Net Economy" news letter, additional carriers are being stressed by the long-term nature of the outage. We are well beyond the "normal" emergency design conditions even NEBS facilities were designed to handle. > Sprint Communications reported outages in New York and Connecticut > as the result of power fluctuations to a south Manhattan switching > facility that supports Sprint's networks.
