SPID stands for Service Profile ID, and you need it in order for your BRI to be operational. There has to be SOMEONE at your phone company that knows what it is, unless your modem(s) support AutoSPID (which downloads/auto-senses the information from the switch..) Anyway, one way or the other, you need to get the SPID or the line will not work. By the way, the convention for SPID in (most of) north america is the phone number +0101. i.e. if your phone number is 987-654-3219, then your SPID would be 98765432190101. I don't know if this is the same in Japan, but you might wanna try that before you go trying to get an answer out of anyone at your local phone company.. I had a long (2 years) experience with GATED-based routers, host-based routers, etc. What did we learn from this experience (we just have a few PC based routers now, but it's due to historical reasons and some compatibility problems for old customer's unix-based routers), is the next idea. Let's you have a few different router vendors (I mind software vendors) in the global IP network, and both have 1 bug in their software. In case if there is 99 Vendor-1 routers, and 1 Vendor-2 router, the bug in Vendor-1 software cause the total network to have a problems, will be fixed in a few days, and moreover, if the network environment (I mean routing tables, AS pathes etc etc) appear in one point of the network, it faile down surrounded routers and you should not be affected by this bug and this network circumstances. But if this circumstances cause the Vendor-2 router to fail down, and they appear at some point of the network, all Vendor-2 routerss should be affected by this bug because they are connected to the Vendor-1 based network don't affected by this circumstances. We saw this a lot of times for GATED (fortunately gated was used by Merit and this forced them to fix the bug quickly; moreover some part of the network have been isolated by Merit from us). We saw this for Wellfleets sometimes. We never saw this for Cisco because any network influence caused CISCO to crash was isolated not far from the origin. I do not defence CISCO and do not blame Wellfleet or someone else; I only tell about our experience. If your use rarely used routing program, you are affected by the network splashes from the any point of total Internet; if you use the same router as your peers and/or upstream provider, you are isolated from such splashes (if this splash cause your router to fail, it cause your peer/ISP's router to fail before). This is the major reason why CISCO totally win the ISP market for now. And this is why a lot of vendors prefere GATED to some third-party software. This does not mean it's excellent. But it makes more difficult for the network admins to choose new hardware if it's based on the absolutely new software. I'd like to prefere the flame about Wellfleet/Cisco/etc... Huh? Funky plugin required to view slides?

I just noticed that when I 'clicked' on the link for Craig Labovitz's slides, my browser went looking for some funky plugin which I don't have -- something like 'Compass' for Office'97 (which I don't run, BTW). Is there someway to correct these slides and make them viewable by one & all? Tnx, - paul

Generally, we would need to know the precise architecture of your network (what are you doing for IBGP distribution? How many interconnects? Who are you peering with? ...) to answer the question in any meaningful way. And then, the result is likely to be that the bandwidth is negligable. Tony

I realise that some of the people on this list is at the NANOG-13 and that might be why I never got a response on my inquiery about scripts finding contacts for a certain IP. I spent a few hours during the afternoon at putting something together. It's very ugly but it seems to work somewhat... I put it at ftp://swm.pp.se/pub/misc/checkcontact-0.1.tgz, it's about 2k in size and is totally shellscripts. It does the following: first checks if you're trying to find out about a 12/8 or 24/8 and then says that it is not implemented. Arins database seems dysfunctional on these nets it has to be hacked around (sometime). It then whois:es the IP at Arin, and goes to RIPE or APNIC if suitable (looks for certain responses). If it finds no match it truncates (that's what I call it) the IP to a network number according to the old class A, B or C-net scheme. Most of the whois databases seems to be built around this. It then tries again. If it during the process finds several NETBLKs it tries to whois them separately and bring out all those contact adresses. Finally it prints out the adresses it found in the whois database. It works on a lot of nets I tested it with (from the SAR database at http://www.powertech.no/smurf) and I mainly made this because I wanted the SAR to be able to automatically contact admins for the smurf relay:able nets found there. (I personally enter all the nets I get smurfed with there). Ok folks, I know it is ugly and I probably shouldnt release it, but it's on a AS-IS basis and I would like suggestions on how to improve on its functionality. PS. It uses fwhois which is a whois client that is using the format whois nick@whoishost. I realise that a lot of you people out there have whois clients that use whois -h host nick. I guess you have to modify the scripts to work with that. Hi I'd like to estimate the amout of BGP route traffic in our proposed network. Are there any case studies of bandwidth usage of the BGP protocol out there? I must not be on enough or the right lists...but what's the deal with worldnic.com? I'd not heard anything about it until today. I tried to move a domain (a .org domain) for a customer today, and got the following reply from domreg(a)internic.net: Thank you for contacting Network Solutions, Inc., InterNIC Registration Services. The domain name you are attempting to update was registered through WorldNIC Services and should be updated via the following URL: http://www.worldnic.com This looks like Network Solutions taking advantage of its position as controller of the big three commercially used TLDs to find new ways to dip their fingers into another part of the pie...perhaps in anticipation of losing their monopoly on domain registrations.
