The Cidr Report

This is an auto-generated mail on Fri Dec 12 12:00:00 PST 1997 It is not checked before it leaves my workstation. However, hopefully you will find this report interesting and will take the time to look through this to see if you can improve the amount of aggregation you perform. The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. You may want to look at the product from Shomiti - which is purported to be able to do this on Fast Ethernet at wire speed, and has a scripting facility via TCL. Be careful. Cisco recognizes that VIP2-40's with OC3-PA's and any other PA co-habitating the VIP card will cause problems (packet loss under peak conditions). This is due to the huge overhead the SARing takes on the VIP's CPU. Cisco will not support multiple PA's within a VIP2-40. This is the primary reason they came out with the VIP2-50. handling large numbers of EBGP peers

I've got a router on Mae West with an open peering policy that has close to 70 peers. I'm currently running gated on a P133 box and have just increased the size of data structures as the number of peers grew. We are looking at going to a Cisco 7200 (with NPE200) or 7500 (with RSP4), but I haven't been able to determine weather these routers will handle this many peers and still have room for expansion. I've heard that Cisco IOS has a software limit, even if the RSPs can handle it, but I haven't been able to tell what it was. Are there routers from other vendors out there handling large numbers of peers? Our bandwidth is too low to want to consider putting a second router on the NAP. I've considered providing ebgp multihop peering to other routers behind this one, but I haven't heard of others doing this sort of thing on the NAP's before. Of course, there are the route servers, but I'm more interested in offering direct peering to anyone that wants it. I only have full routing tables coming in at 2 places in my network and might anticipate having 8 - 10 IBGP peer sessions in addition to external sessions. Rob

We have multiple VIP2-40, but the only problems were running PA-2H with other cards. Until CISCO pulled them from market. Also, the PA-OC3 only be the only card in a VIP2-40.
