Questions regarding equipment for a large LAN event

Hi Nanog, This email might seem a bit strange but bear with me. I am a member of a student club in Montreal named "Lan ETS". Every year, we organize on the biggest LAN event in North-America. We have an amazing partnership with Cisco where they allow us to request a fair amount of equipment so that we can create the best experience for our players. This year, we are looking into some equipment that slightly out of our usual expertise. Usually, we target high-density stackable switches like a 3650/3750/3850 with 48 GigE and 4 SFP for our 10G core. We design our network around small "islands" of players all linked with each other through a 2x10G fiber network. Everyone is assigned a public address and we route everyone out through our core switch. We were looking at either the Nexus 7004 chassis or the ASR 9004/9006 chassis for this year event. We would then use 48xGigE and 1x24 SFP+ line cards. Our actual port requirements and somewhat flexible but we do need at least 4x10G Fiber ports. And at least 48 GigE ports for players or access switches. I'm also open to any suggestion within Cisco portfolio. Our needs are pretty standard and nothing extraordinary but we would like to use this opportunity in order to try new equipment and technologies that are usually only seem within ISP and large networks. Dear Google, As of Dec 2nd the Google Chrome 47.0.2526.73M breaks NTLM proxy authentication. This is unfortunate as nobody can get off the company network now, which is secure I suppose, but not quite what I had in mind. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/G_9eXH9c_ns;context-p… So if anybody gets called that Google Chrome is throwing a username/password prompt for every website you try, listing the website as the authentication domain, instead of the proxy server, this is for you. If you are ahead of the curve, you can make a GPO to disable Chrome updates for the time being until this is fixed. If the browser already updated, well, sorry. Kind regards, Seth

Amazon - Wrong website location

Hello, Amazon's website is currently suggesting Amazon India, rather than Amazon USA. So I'm guessing whatever GeoIP database they're using is out of date, but I have updated as many public GeoIP databases I could find. I have emailed their noc@ email address multiple times, but have not heard back from them. Does anyone know where I can fix this up, or who I can contact to resolve this?

DHCPv6 PD & Routing Questions

Hi, Have a simple couple of questions here. In my admittedly cursory glances over the DHCPv6 RFCs, I don't see any reference to the protocol having any role in managing the routing of prefixes it delegates. Perhaps I missed it, but I somewhat expected the omission of this responsibility would be the case. My questions are: 1) Does the DHCPv6 protocol include any standards/mechanisms/methods for managing routes to prefixes it delegates, or does it consider this outside of its function? (I suspect the latter) 2) What are the most common ways of managing the routing of delegated prefixes in the ISPs routing domain? Has a standard method/best practice emerged yet? Routing protocols? IPv6 RAs? One obvious answer would be routing protocols. In my brief googling, I've seen a forum post that seems to indicate that Comcast makes use of RIPng on their CPE to propagate routing information for prefixes delegated to it. Can someone confirm this? This would seem as good a method as any to do this, albeit with obvious security concerns. What's the best way to implement a DHCPV6 PD client on a Linux router? Dibbler seems to do everything except route propagation (asks for PD, puts PD address on local NIC if asked). Anything better out there? TIA, - Jim

Modem as a service?

We are looking to automate testing of OOB modem connections when our NMS detects a site connection failure. Rather than have a live body call a modem number (or even a fax) to see if it answers (to determine if there is a potential site power issue), we'd like to be able to utilize some "Modem as a service" to automate this. I've exhausted my Google skills trying to see if anything like this exists. Anyone have any experience? The basecamp group to which he refers is the group of all of the different NOC and architect folks from the various companies, who strategized together, and all of their info is still there. I agree Protonmail took a stance and believe many others can learn from their experience. But let's not over simplify the problem. According to their blogs the attacks were over 100G and went on for hours at a time over several days. Attacks can go on for days and months. Protonmail found themselves up against varying attack tactics and ultimately took a defense in depth approach to mitigate the attack. Null routing original ip completes the attack, game over , sever is down. Granted this can help prevent colateral damages. Combined with proxies can work well for dns redirect to route through cloud scrubbing but these solutions can add latency and impact legitimate traffic also. With redirection there is also the complexity of TLS/SSL (certificate management, privacy, etc.) And then you must also consider ip based (non proxied) targets. These dns redirect/proxy methods don't handle ip based attack targets and cause the need to swing ip prefixes via bgp. Bottom line, attackers can impact the infrastructure by varying their tactics and the approach should be well thought out and multilayered.
