Hi, I would like to get some input from this group on K-12 programs. My desire is to get some feel on the role of the regionals in provisioning K-12, and how they go about it, and what the issues of extending the Internet into the K-12 community are. I think of extending the Internet in terms of through direct IP connectivity, or some application level connectivity (telnet, mail, etc.), other protocols (uucp,, fred ...), etc. here is a partial list of issues that be of interest to discuss or hear about: Barriers to connectivity: cost, adequate service, appropriate technology, who pays?, can a regional's NOC handle a couple hundred schools in a major urban area, etc. What technology issues need to be addressed: is IP the right way to go, do telnet, ftp and email provide sufficient value added, are user interfaces the barrier everyone says they are? What have been, or what will be good matches of technology with programmatic elements inside the schools. Which communities with the schools really benefit, and why: teachers, science students, english students, seniors, 3rd graders? Where can the regionals have the greatest impact wrt K-12 network access and in which areas are they ill suited to make a difference. What do you figure for costs: equipment, line costs, ramp-up time for both sides (network provider and schools), continuing costs over time, etc. what stuff do you use? Cisco terminal servers? NAT routers, PCs, Macs? What software? training material? anything else?... I am asking this for several reasons. I am getting asked these questions on a regular basis and I would like to know more about what people are doing so I can tell people: "go talk to ..., they did something interesting in that area ...". Also, Los Alamos has run a supercomputing program with schools in NM for the last two years, and last year over 100 schools signed up, which is fantastic given how small a population is in this state. Most schools use terminals to access LANL via 2400 baud modems into New Mexico Technet. We are looking at what it might take to get many of the schools up on the Internet and would like to learn what others have done. The students are especially interested and we would like to make it possible for them to "build the network from scratch". I would really like to hear from people about what things they think have made their efforts a success, and from efforts that did not work out with a good post mortem analysis. May ANSNET/NSFNET Backbone Engineering Report

Hi. Following is an excerpt from the May report which will be included in this month's Internet Monthly Report. The missing text was already sent to this list as RS/960 deployment notes each week during the backbone hardware upgrades. Mark +----------------------------------------------------------------+ ANSNET/NSFNET Backbone Engineering Report May 1992 Jordan Becker, ANS Mark Knopper, Merit becker(a)ans.net mak(a)merit.edu T3 Network Status ================= The major event for May was the successful completion of the deployment of new "RS/960" DS3 interface cards on the entire T3 backbone. The five week deployment went very smoothly, and the new cards have increased the reliability and performance of the network. Cutovers of traffic from the T1 to the T3 backbones were suspended and delayed until June because of the deployment activities. Other activities of interest include new build and routing daemon software on the T3 network nodes. Two of the three links to CA*Net (Toronto to Ithaca, and Montreal to Princeton) were upgraded from fractional-T1 rate to full T1 rate this month. The T1 backbone is stable now that it is carrying less than 50% of the total NSFNET traffic, though the RCP nodes continue to be closely monitored since they are still carrying the full routing advertisements. Full traffic statistics for the T3 net are not available because the initial software release for the RS/960 support on the T3 backbone did not support returning the interface counters from the SNMP MIB. This will be corrected for the month of June. Also, the net to net matrix statistics are not available. A sampling technique is being developed which will allow this data to be collected once again. Routing Daemon Changes ====================== The rcp_routed program for the T3 network was upgraded to a new version containing several improvements. These included a change to allow Cisco peer routers to accept a full routing table (~4000 networks) from the ENSS. There is now an option for rcp_routed to add a time delay when the peer is a slower processor. All Ciscos in the backbone now have a full routing table rather than using default. Another change was made to fix a problem that caused an internal-BGP connection to be reset. Several bug fixes that causes crashes or daemon restarts were fixed. SNMP Daemon Changes =================== The RS/960 software build does not include the ability to obtain ethernet interface statistics. This will be corrected the week of June 8. As of June 3, traffic statistics were available for the ENSS T3 interfaces. These figures can be used to closely approximate traffic counts for the ENSS nodes. It should be noted that both the if[In|Out]McastPkts and if[In|Out]UcastPkts variables should be queried and summed for both T3 and ethernet interfaces, for those who are polling the backbone nodes. RS/960 Deployment Chronology ============================ Following is a summary of the 5 week deployment activities for May which completed installation of the RS/960 DS3 hardware adaptors in all T3 network nodes. ... Step 5: May 22-23 The fifth, and final, stage of the Phase 3 deployment was commenced at 23:00 hours Friday, May 22 and completed by turning on all traffic through a re-built, RS960 based backbone at 09:38 Saturday morning. The problems encountered were relatively minor and were dealt with rather quickly, enabling return to full operation ahead of schedule. The resulting stability of the T3 network has been excellent since this final cutover. We are very grateful to all of the regional-techs that assisted and cooperated with us during the 5 week deployment. Week 5 Problems =============== At Washington POP (CNSS59) after the rebuild, the machine failed to reboot properly in "SECURE" mode. The service switch was found to be defective and was replaced. CNSS57, targeted to be a spare, was cannibalized for the spare part. At Washington POP (CNSS58) the RS960 T3 card in slot 4 failed to load its microcode and the card was replaced. At Washington POP (CNSS56) the node did not recognize an RS960 T3 card (no POSID). This indicates that card was not identifying itself to the system and the card was replaced. At College Park (ENSS136) the RS960 T3 card came up in NONAP mode (would not talk to the system) and was replaced. At Greensboro POP (CNSS73) a corrupted ODM database was suspected and the node system software was reloaded from a prepared tape. Deborah Matties-Sharp and Kraig Owen, in anticipation, had all sites prepared with bootable back-up tapes and their foresight paid off. Also at Greensboro, the communication cable from the DSU servicing Georgia Tech. (ENSS138) was found to be defective (this cable previously was operational) and was replaced by removing an identical cable from CNSS75 which no longer needed a DSU. The problem was difficult to isolate because the DSU would respond to query of the serial number, but would respond with garbaled messages to other queries. It was noted that at Greensboro LBO's had been set at "LONG" (or HI) but after the DSU change the T3 circuit to Georgia Tech had to be set "SHORT" (or LOW). We are investigating this further. Lastly, at New York POP the cable from the RS6000 serial port#S2 for the CNSS35 modem was replaced as planned. Results ======= It took 27 minutes to have all routes come up from the first site (Hartford POP) to the last site Georgia Tech. (ENSS138). We have installed new SNMP agent (and sub-agent) software across the T3 backbone to support the new variables collected on the RS960 T3 cards SNMP access for some variables on the T960 ethernet/T1 cards are temporarily in-accessible. We expect to have this supported shortly. SNMP client programs may have to be re-tested to insure they are collecting valid data. Because there are no more hybrid links (e.g. Hawthorne T3<->RS960 T3), the T3 network link metrics have been reset to normal values in order to split traffic equally across equal hop paths. A party was held at Mark Knopper's house on May 23 to commemorate the complete deployment of the RS/960 cards. As part of the festivities, an authentic Hawthorne card was buried amid a not-so-solemn ceremony.

NSFNET T1 backbone routing configuration changes

Hi. The T1 backbone routing software allows up to 1200 routes to be configured at any metric per NSS. We reached this limit a while back at several sites. With the May 12 update, we made the following adjustments to the T1 backbone routing database in order to stay within the 1200 route per unique metric per NSS limit and to provide future space: NSS 8 moved 745 nets with AS 756 (T1-T3 Network Interconnect (Princeton, NJ) metric 11 to metric 17. NSS 9 moved 558 nets with AS 184 (Milnet (FIX-East)) metric 1 & 2, to AS 184 metric 7 & 8. NSS 10 moved 208 nets with AS 590 (EASInet Regional Network) metric 1 to metric 7. NSS 13 moved 558 nets with AS 164 (Milnet (FIX-West)) metric 1 & 2, to AS 164 metric 7 & 8. NSS 17 moved 745 nets with AS 750 (T1-T3 Network Interconnect (Ann Arbor, MI)) metric 10 to metric 16. While these changes are transparent to backbone routing, it was brought to our attention that they may affect sites which use the nis.nsf.net reports to generate access lists, etc. So, we will keep this list informed as these reconfigurations become necessary in the future. SunOS. These vulnerabilities exist in NIS under SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, and 4.1.2, and may or may not exist in earlier versions of NIS. Sun has provided fixes for SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, and 4.1.2 for these vulnerabilities. The patch file containing these fixes is available through your local Sun Answer Center and through anonymous ftp from ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9) in the /systems/sun/sun-dist directory. Note that these fixes will probably not be compatible with SunOS 4.0.3 and earlier versions of the operating system. Description A security vulnerability exists under NIS allowing unauthorized access to NIS information. II. Impact A user on a remote host can obtain copies of the NIS maps from a system running NIS. The remote user can attempt to guess passwords for the system using the obtained NIS password map information. III. Solution A. Obtain and install the patch from Sun or from ftp.uu.net following the instructions provided in the "README" file. 1. Sprint/Cornell ICMnet Transition Report

Sprint/Cornell ICMnet Transition Progress report SPRINTLINK: Sprint and Cornell University are proceding forward with the transition of NOC duties from Ithaca to Sprint's SprintLink NOC in Herndon, VA. A key element in the transition has been the establishment of a fully functional SprintLink national backbone. The backbone is now connected to the CIX; and it is connected to FIX-E via Sprint "ICMNET2." It will also soon be connected to FIX-W via Sprint ICMNET3. The routing within this complex arrangement could not have been accomplished without the help of Mr. Peter Lothberg, SWIPnet/NORDUnet, who assured end-to- end routing integrity from NSFNET and SprintLink's CIX connection to the Sprint EBS1 router in Stockholm where the connection to EBONE is made. NSFNET-EBONE: 768 kbps service (ICMNET2) is now operational between FIX-E and Stockholm. It utilizes a path which bypasses an outage-prone PTT facility in the Netherlands. The 256 kbps service (ICMNET1) between Ithaca and Stockholm is in the process of being taken down. We expect this coordinated effort between Sprint and SWIPnet/NORDUnet to be accomplished in early July. NSFNET-JIX On Friday, June 5, the ICMnet link (ICMNET3) from the Japanese Internet eXchange (JIX) in Tokyo to the Sprint ICMnet router at FIX-W will be transitioned to Sprint NOC management. NSFNET-LATIN AMERICA AND CARRIBBEAN When the transition of Cornell-homed circuits is completed the Sprint ICMnet equipment (router, channel bank, etc) at Cornell will be relocated to the Pan Amsat VSAT earth station in Homestead, Florida for the purpose of providing NSFNET connectivity to the Latin American and Carribbean community as discussed at the First Interamerican Networking Workshop held October 7-11 in Rio de Janeiro. Hi. Some NSFNET sites are configured to run both EGP and BGP sessions with the NSFNET from the same AS at the same time. Please avoid this practice and run only one or the other until further notice. We have discovered lost routes and black holing of traffic on the T3 backbone under such a configuration.
