============================================================================= CA-93:13 CERT Advisory September 17, 1993 SCO Home Directory Vulnerability ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CERT Coordination Center has received information indicating that SCO Operating Systems may be vulnerable to a potential compromise of system security. This vulnerability allows unauthorized access to the "dos" and "asg" accounts, and, as a result of this access, unauthorized access to the "root" account may also occur. The following releases of SCO products are affected by this vulnerability: SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 2.0 SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System version 4.x SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.0 with Maintenance Supplement Version 4.1 and/or Version 4.2 SCO Network Bundle Release 4.x SCO Open Desktop Release 1.x SCO Open Desktop Release 2.0 SCO Open Desktop Lite Release 3.0 SCO Open Desktop Release 3.0 SCO Open Server Network System Release 3.0 SCO Open Server Enterprise System Release 3.0 CERT and The Santa Cruz Operation recommend that all sites using these SCO products take action to eliminate the source of vulnerability from their systems. This problem will be corrected in upcoming releases of SCO operating systems. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Description The home directories of the users "dos" and "asg" are /tmp and /usr/tmp respectively. These directories are designed to have global write permission. II. Impact This vulnerability may allow unauthorized users to gain access to these accounts. This vulnerability may also corrupt certain binaries in the system and thus prevent regular users from running them, as well as introduce a potential for unauthorized root access. III. Solution All affected sites should follow these instructions: 1. Log onto the system as "root" 2. Choose the following sequence of menu selections from the System Administration Shell, which is invoked by typing "sysadmsh" a. Accounts-->User-->Examine--> [select the "dos" account] -->Identity -->Home directory-->Create-->Path--> [change it to /usr/dos instead of /tmp]--> confirm b. Accounts-->User-->Examine--> [select the "asg" account] -->Identity -->Home directory-->Create-->Path--> [change it to /usr/asg instead of /usr/tmp]--> confirm 3. If DOS binaries have been modified, or sites are unable to determine if modification has occurred, we strongly recommend removing and reinstalling the DOS package of the Operating System Extended Utilities. This can be done using custom(ADM). Sites may also want to check their systems for signs of further compromise. This can be facilitated through the use of programs such as COPS. =========================================================================== CA-93:12 CERT Advisory September 16, 1993 Novell LOGIN.EXE Vulnerability --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CERT Coordination Center has received information concerning a security vulnerability in Novell's NetWare 4.x login program (LOGIN.EXE). This vulnerability affects NetWare 4.0 and 4.01. It does not affect NetWare 2.x, NetWare 3.x, or Netware for UNIX. Novell is making available a security enhancement to the login program for NetWare 4.x. CERT strongly recommends that sites using of Novell NetWare 4.X replace their current LOGIN.EXE program on all affected systems with this security-enhanced version as soon as possible. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Description: A security vulnerability exists in LOGIN.EXE in Novell NetWare 4.X. In some environments, a user's name and password may be temporarily written to disk. II. BGP policies and packet forwarding

This is a problem which is perhaps solvable via BGP4 or even otherwise... I have a network of cisco routers (csc3), running cisco IGRP. I carry the end-site networks in the IGP. The border gateway to the ENSS runs igrp as well as BGP. a----------+-A----------C-+-----ENSS ----- NSFnet b---------/ | | | | | | c----------+-B----------D | d---------/ \------ x -------- y In the above picture, I denote my backbone routers as capital A B C D and I am using lowercase 'a b c d' for the end sites. All the backbone routers run IGRP and carry full end site routing information. The problem I am having is in routing for/to 'y' a, c, x, y all are belonging to the same company and 'x' desires that traffic from 'a' and 'c' to 'y' goes over the x-y private link. However, traffic from the non-company sites (b & d) should flow via the ENSS and then to 'y'. How do I tell the routers 'C' and 'D' to send traffic from 'a' and 'c' via the private link x-y and all other traffic via the ENSS ? If a packet arrives at D destined for 'y', then I don't see any way of *forwarding* it to 'x' or 'C' based on the *source* address. I was reading about 'encapsulation' in the 'bgp-application' draft, but has that been implemented yet ? Should I not carry the 'a' 'c' 'x' & 'y' routes in my igrp and just use IBGP ? If so, then do I need to create an IBGP peer mesh with all routers in my network ? Will that give me the capability to route traffic based on the *source* network address ? Lastly, note that I have drawn a simplistic view of the net... in actuality, there are a lot more backbone and end routers involved. As part of this review process, we have developed two new flavors of machine-readable reports which contain all the information about nets that we keep. Because of the implementation of CIDR this fall, all current reports that include net information will change; if you will need to modify any of your programs because of these changes, you might consider modifying them to use the new reports that were designed for machine parsing. We have also expanded the syntax recognized by the "whois" server on prdb.merit.edu, so you can run any of our prdb "clients" without compiling those clients on your own machine. Both these services are described below. The Organizational Address is currently listed in a single string, which is the way it is internally stored in the PRDB today. Issues about parsings of organizational addresses are being discussed as part of the Shared Whois project--let me know if you have concerns about these kinds of parsings. Whois Access to the Same Information ==================================== Last March, Merit announced a set of "prdbshow" clients that can be used to obtain realtime information (merit.edu:/pub/src/prdbshow.tar.Z). A few people had trouble compiling the clients, or preferred not to do so. Current documentation for this whole service may be obtained with the command: whois -h prdb.merit.edu help The Futures of the Current Reports: =================================== Of the current reports, there were three network reports and one AS report that had widespread usage: net-comp.now ans-core.now country.now as-as.now We will continue supporting these reports. (Note though that we will be forced to change the format of these reports sometime this fall when we move to CIDR-type net addresses. If you modify your programs to use the new reports now, you will be immune from these changes to the old reports). Some reports were not mentioned as being used by anyone. We would like to phase these reports out, since all this information is now available in several more concise and convenient ways. These reports include: net.net-now net.ter-now nets.as_### yymmdd.as_### as-gw.now nss-gw.now If there are no objections from this group to phasing these reports out, then we will begin inserting messages into these reports about their coming demise, including an email address to protest to. After a couple of months we would then discontinue producing these reports. There were a few other reports that were used by only a single person, specifically: gate-gw.now netcount.now non-us.now nss-as.now as-site.now I would like to work with these individuals to see if we can meet their needs with the new access to the whois and prdbshow clients, and to the new reports; perhaps with the help of some short custom unix scripts. If there are others who would like help creating custom scripts to meet specific needs, please send me a message.
