AS690 Gated Installation Summary - Sunday Feb. 13th 08:10EST
================================
The AS690 gated deployment this past evening was very successful. We
are now running gated in production on ENSS205, ENSS194, ENSS160,
ENSS131, ENSS139, CNSS120, and ENSS158.
These gated nodes are now supporting interoperability with the
rcp_routed IGP & IBGP2, external BGP2 and external BGP4 (3 peers at
Rice U. thanks to Bill Manning), and several EGP peers. We also are
monitoring the appropriate gated MIBs.
We found some minor problems along the way, some of which will
have to be fixed before the next scheduled deployment, but we did
not see anything that would result in operational problems, or require
us to back out to rcp_routed.
We would like to schedule the next deployment for Tuesday morning Feb
15th (05:00-08:00EST). We would like to deploy gated on ENSS136,
ENSS145, ENSS144 during this window.
Once we successfully complete installation on these nodes, we would
like to deploy across the rest of the AS690 system. This will require
a bit of work on the Policy Routing Database to ensure that don't have
to do any manual corrections to the gated configuration files as we go
along.
The summary of problems that were observed during the Sunday
morning gated deployment include:
1. Gated "passive" connection option not working. Rcp_routed does
not actively try to establish sessions with external routers, and
instead waits for them to establish the connection. Gated tries
to actively connect to all configured external peers unless the
"passive" configuration option is used. The passive
configuration option in gated does not seem to be working, and we
observed a few startup connection wars occur between ENSS131 and
its BGP peers, and likewise with ENSS139. The problem occurs
when gated and its external peers try to establish connections at
the same time. This settles down after a couple of minutes and
the connections stay up once established. This will be fixed in
gated.
2. We observed on ENSS194, and ENSS139 that upon some
occaisional initializations of gated, we sometimes do not get all
of the LSP packets, and the link state database is incomplete.
In the case of ENSS194, it did not get all of its adjacencies
when gated was first started. This worked itself out on its own
after a few minutes. On ENSS139 we saw the same thing, only
it did not work itself out until after we re-started gated. This
most likely has something to do with way rcp_routed establishes
adjacencies. We did not see this on the testnet, and we have
no way easy way to debug this, but once stable, the gated
systems seem to stay that way. For now, we will address this
problem by restarting gated if it gets in this state following gated
initialization, and migrate away from rcp_routed as soon as
possible.
3. We found a bug in the gated dynamic reconfiguration where
gated will crash if we try to reconfigure on the fly with gated
systems that support multiple EGP peers. Rcp_routed does not
support the same level of dynamic reconfiguration as gated.
We were able to reproduce this problem consistently on
ENSS139 (Houston). This is a bug that we would like to fix
before the next wave of gated deployment.

The good news is that since Friday morning, we now have a stable
gated/BGP4 router interoperating with 90+ rcp_routed peers within
AS690, and we are preparing for further gated/BGP4 deployment on
AS690 routers.
The bad news is that we suffered a major system-wide rcp_routed
failure along the way. On Thursday evening around 22:00EST, we
exercised a dormant bug within rcp_routed where the gated router
(ENSS205) sent a valid IBGP message to its 90+ rcp_routed peers
that they did not process correctly and the routing daemon died.
This resulted in about a 45 minute outage, although the gated peer
(ENSS205) stayed up. The problem was immediately traced to an
rcp_routed bug. The rcp_routed bug (which was not found on our
testnet) was fixed and deployed during Friday mornings configuration
window.
The ENSS205 router is a semi-production system that has been used
to stage new gated versions onto AS690. The last update to gated
on this system was done outside the normal configuration
maintenance window in an effort to expedite the deployment on other
full-production nodes for CIDR transition. While this outage could
have occurred at any time (it was induced by a random external peer
interaction) a procedural improvement will be administered for all
gated installations by establishing special scheduled maintenance
windows to minimize the impact of any problems, and to work
towards a timely AS690 CIDR deployment.
There are a two non-critical known problems with the AS690 gated
that have been (or will be addressed) prior to the next installation.
I have summarized these problems below for those interested.
Another new development is that the rcp_routed support for a default
route that was previously deployed on AS690 was successfully tested
during the last scheduled configuration maintenance window. A non-
disruptive configuration change can be administered at any time to
enable AS690 to default to the AS1133 (gated BGP4/CIDR) peer
which is connected to both MAE-East, and to CNSS57 (AS690) over
a private 10Mb/s ethernet segment. This may be required to assist
specific MAE-East peers with a timely CIDR deployment.
We have established two specific upcoming maintenance windows for
gated deployment on AS690 routers. The next window will be
Sunday Morning Feb 14 (00:30EST - 08:00EST). The AS690 routers
that we have picked as candidates to convert to run gated (pending
consent of the peers) include:
ENSS194 (ANS Ann Arbor Backup Router)
ENSS158 (Maui HPCC)
CNSS120 (Honolulu CNSS)
ENSS205 (new Gated re-deployment)
ENSS160 (ANS Elmsford)
ENSS139 (Rice U)
ENSS131 (Ann Arbor)
There is an overlapping power maintenance scheduled window for the
MCI New York POP (Sunday morning 00:30EST-02:30EST) that we
will work around, and should not interfere with the gated deployment
activities.
The ANS NOC has contacted each of the peers that will be affected
by service disruptions on these nodes to acknowledge their consent,
and NSR messages have been sent for each of these maintenance
windows describing the gated deployment, and the potential for
AS690 routing instabilities that may occur during these windows.
Following this maintenance we would like to validate with the peers
that all configurations with external peers are behaving as expected.
If this maintenance is successful we would like to continue the AS690
deployment during the Tuesday morning Feb 15th configuration
maintenance window (05:00EST - 08:00EST) for the following
candidate nodes:
ENSS136 (College Park)
ENSS145 (FIX-East)
ENSS144 (FIX-West)
We would try to identify any problems within the maintenance
window. If we could not complete this maintenance within the
window, these routers would be rolled back to run rcp_routed.
Once we have stabilized the above set of nodes, the rest of the
AS690 could proceed as rapidly as can be scheduled (within
maintenance windows).
For general interest, the two known problems with AS690 gated that
we expect to fix before the AS690 deployment concludes. These
may be summarized as:
1. Jurassic LSPs. At the time rcp_routed was originally developed,
there was an IS-IS LSP packet format that was designed to
carry external routes, before IBGP was implemented to carry
these. Modern rcp_routed does no longer cares about this,
however still occasionally generates these "Jurassic LSPs" which
have header but carry no external routes, from specific
production rcp_routed nodes at rcp_routed startup time (we can
not reproduce this on our testnet). Gated does not know what
to do with these packets so it drops them and logs an error
message. Rcp_routed acks them and goes on about its
business. Rather than modifying rcp_routed to eliminate these
LSPs, we instead worked around this by adding a few lines of
code to the gated SLSP to ack these packets and ignore them.
This does not cause problems running gated on a few
production network nodes and will not bother ENSS205, but we
should and will fix this before we scale the deployment up
further.
2. BGP memory leak. We have previously known from our testnet
experience that there is a slow memory leak in the gated BGP
code that is exercised when a connection to an external peer
fails and gated tries to re-establish the session. The only way
we could observe this problems on the testnet was when a
gated machine was forced to try and establish sessions (2 times
per second) with 80 external peers that refused to connect for
about 4 days.
We would not expect to see problems with this on nodes that
are configured properly, but in any case we expect to have a
fix for this shortly and this will be retrofitted on existing gated
nodes during a future installation window.

These are some notes that I made as I was preparing my presentation
for the RegTechs meeting in San Diego Jan31/Feb 1. I have revised them
(some what) in light of some of the conversations & presentations made
at the RegTechs meeting.
There are undoubtably holes & inaccuracies in these notes; please
correct any that you see.

MAE-East status
MAE-East is a 10 Meg 'ethernet' made up of 3 rings:
- Sprint POP to Boone Blvd
- College Park/ESnet to Boone Blvd
- College Park/NSFNET, MCI POP, WilTel POP, Union Station, and
Boone Blvd
Each ring is made up of 10 Meg slices of a T3 and learning filtering
bridges.
The 3 rings are joined together at Boone Blvd with a small ethernet.
MAE-East is getting pretty loaded and something needs to be done to
increase the bandwidth.
Work is proceeding on several fronts to get this done.
The most popular option seems to be splitting the rings up into
smaller point-to-point links and joining them with a ethernet switch
(like a Kalpana box) at Boone Blvd.
Other options are doing some sort of ATM switch in the middle, or
switching to higher speed ATM, SMDS, or FDDI.
There are some folks working on getting firm pricing for these options.
[Note: This last week there has been some more work done w/ MFS to get
the current technology to work a bit better. Some of the rings have
been shifted about a bit (I think that the PSI sites are now on the
same ring as ESnet). There is more being done and things are shifting
fast enough that this will probably be out of date by the time you read
it.]

BGP4 deployment status
There are not that many folks that have deployed BGP4 yet. This
is not good.
So far, AlterNet, Ebone, SprintLink, ICMnet, EUnet, TIPnet, PIPEX, and
AS1133 (CERN) have deployed BGP4 (that I know of). ANS is behind their
announced schedule. This list is incomplete (I sure hope that there
are other folks out there that are running BGP4 that I do not know
of). Europe seems to be further ahead than the US (I have heard that a
number of European networks are using BGP4; but I don't have a list).
Not all of these folks are running BGP4 between them yet - e.g.: the
AlterNet/AS1133 link is still BGP3.
People are not making public their BGP4 deployment plans, nor are they
making their routing plans public (ala the RIPE routing registry
database). Without this data, it is really hard to know when or if we
can announce CIDR routes safely.
There are already CIDR-routes (non A/B/C routes) that are being
announced in the Internet today. When I last checked (Sunday 1/30/94),
all but one of the more specific routes (the A/B/C nets) were also
being announced.
BGP4 is real; BGP4 works; people need to deploy it; people need to
deploy it now.
We still don't know all of the folks that need to deploy BGP4.
We still don't know what will break if CIDR routes are used.
Implementation status:
Cisco code is working & deployed in most of the nets that are
running BGP4. Gated code is working & deployed on AS 1133. 3com
code is working on the BGP4 test net. I don't know the status of
any other code.
Why is it so important that we get BGP4 & CIDR working & working now?
Routing table growth.
16 Meg ciscos may only be able to support 25K-30K routes. [The
jury is still out on this one; cisco is continuing to improve their
code to put more routes into the same amount of memory. cisco is
also looking at 64 Meg routers.]
Peter Lothburg took a look at his routers (Ebone & ICMnet) and found
that he could only support approx 18K routes total!
On ciscos (at least), the number of routes that you can support depends
on how much free memory you have - memory is used for the forwarding
table, the routing table, and for updates (and other things). The more
destinations you see the larger your forwarding table is - so central
routers (like ICMnet & Ebone) will have more memory used for forwarding
tables. Routing table size is the total number of routes you have plus
how many different paths you have to each of those routes (the Ebone
and ICMnet see nearly every route with something like 5 paths).
Routing updates use memory for both incoming updates from your peers
(eBGP & iBGP) and for outgoing updates (most notably for iBGP peers -
since every incoming update from an eBGP peer is (typically) sent to
every iBGP peer). The more routing updates you get (the more unstable
the overall network is), the more memory you will use. Central routes
tend to see lots more updates (this is not entirely true since cisco's
BGP4 code has some dampening of updates - they delay forwarding updates
for a short while, so that if a net goes down & then back up fairly
quickly, you may not see any update at all downstream).
When ciscos start running out of memory, they try to conserve memory by
delaying processing of incoming updates and sending of outgoing updates
(rather than just hitting the wall & tipping over). This means that
routing may take longer to stablize & may not ever stablize as things
get really bad.
In any case, Peter's routers have about 1.9 Meg free today; AlterNet
routers have approx 4 Meg free - the same number of total routes, but
different routing policy and (probably) fewer destinations, updates,
and paths.
The ANS ENSSs may only be able to support 25K routes. [ANS thinks that
they can up this by another 5K routes to a total of 30K.]
We are now at 16,788 routes (as of 1/30/94 17:00 EST).
[17,410 as of 2/11/94, 14:00 EST.]
I did some analysis of routing table growth from a number of
different angles, and all pointed to running out of memory by mid
summer (unless we do something). [This used 25K as the drop dead date -
we should be hitting 18K in about 1.5-2 weeks.]
The growth rate seems to be 1000 net every 3 weeks.
[I looked at routing table sizes & growth over the last few months;
also at current doubling time (9 months; ref ALE working group);
also at free memory usage in my routers. All of my projections
came out with approx the same drop dead date of mid summer. I also
did not leave any memory for things like packets, so my dates are
overly optimistic.]
[I also looked at some data provided by Merit (their active net
counts), and their projections agree very closely with mine - approx
mid summer for 25K routes and 1000 nets every 3 weeks.]
We need to attack the routing table size on a number of fronts -
router vendor code changes (to use less memory per route), router
hardware changes (to add more memory), changes in routing policies
(things like more use of default routes & suboptimal routing),
newer routing protocols (that do not need full routing tables on
a large number of routers; things like route servers), and BGP4/CIDR
deployment.
The one that seems to be the easiest & quickest to deploy is
BGP4/CIDR.
The problem is that if I CIDRize my own routes, I can save about
1000 routes in my own tables (and push death off by maybe a month
or so).
I need you to CIDRize your routes to save space in my routing
tables.
I could also proxy aggregate your routes, but proxy aggregation is
hard. If I hear your routes via several possible paths, and if
the same aggregation is not done in the same way on all of the
paths, then traffic may go over suboptimal paths (since traffic
always takes a more specific route over a less specific route).
Proxy aggregation is doubly hard, if I don't know about all of the
possible paths that I could hear your routes over.
[There was some discussion about where it was safe (or safer) to do
proxy aggregation - basically it all boils down to knowing the (local)
topology and lots of communication between the parties involved.]
This gets to routing registries.
People have to publish their routing policies in some public place
so that other people can look at these policies and try to figure
out if some change that they are contemplating (like announcing
CIDR routes) will cause problems elsewhere in the Internet.
These routing policies need to be in some common format, so that
tools can use them.
The only such database that I know of is the RIPE database. People
should use this. Two folks from RIPE will be giving a talk on this
later (Daniel Karrenburg & Tony Bates). [Merit will also be doing a
routing policy database & is going to coordinate with the RIPE folks.
The Merit & RIPE folks should be able to say more on this.]
A bit more on proxy aggregation.
If you know the local topology well enough, and if there is
communications & coordinations among the people involved, you can do
proxy aggregation safely.
A couple of examples:
BGP4 network 'B' connects to non-BGP4 stub network 'S'.
S has no other connections to the rest of the world.
B --- S
B can do proxy aggregation of S's nets. [Note that B can probably
proxy aggregate w/o even talking to S, but this is probably a bad
idea.]
BGP4 network 'B' connects to non-BGP4 network 'S'.
'S' has just one other connection to non-BGP4 network 'T'.
T has no other connections to the rest of the world.
B --- S --- T
B can do proxy aggregation of S's and T's nets.
BGP4 network 'A' connects to non-BGP4 network 'S'.
BGP4 network 'B' connects to non-BGP4 network 'S'.
S has no other connections to the rest of the world.
A --- S --- B
A & B can do proxy aggregation of S's nets. Note that A and B need to
do the *same* proxy aggregation, or things may not work (routing follows
the most specific route).
There are other examples; they all depend on complete knowledge of the
(local) topology and coordination between all of the parties involved.
Obviously as the topology gets more complex, and the number of parties
grows, this gets to be a harder & harder problem.
Some of the conclusions on deployment of BGP4/CIDR
People are deploying BGP4; the code seems to be working just fine.
People are going to be announcing CIDR routes and doing proxy
aggregation fairly shortly (like w/in the next week or so). Partially
this is a matter of self defense, so that routers don't tip over.
It looks like things will work, if there is a large enough BGP4 core,
and if people are either part of the BGP4 core or have a default route
to the BGP4 core, or have a default route to someone who has a default
route to the BGP4 core (basically a path of defaults, all going towards
the BGP4 core).
I think that the sites that are currently doing BGP4 form a large
enough core for things to work. If ANS can get things working to join
the BGP4 core, then things will be better; however ANS already has code
deployed that can use a default route (most likely to AS1133). It
would also be very useful for the CIX-West routers to be part of the
BGP4 core.
I also think that everyone either is already part of the BGP4 or has a
default route towards it. This point was brought up at the RegTechs
meeting, and no one voiced any objections.
So, I think (& hope) that we are in (more-or-less) good shape.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
REPORT CHANGES: (Updated 2/8/94)
CIDRIZATION: On January 4, we converted all Policy Routing DataBase
(PRDB) output, including this report, to CIDR notation. All occurrences
of network numbers ("x.x.x") on output have been replaced by aggregate
notation ("x.x.x/len"). The previous formats for ans_core.now, country.now,
or net-comp.now, now in the files ans_core.old, country.old, and net-comp.old
in the nic.merit.edu: nsfnet/announced.networks directory. These ".old"
files will be discontinued on March 1.
TRANSITION TO GATED: During February, the "routed" routing software on
the backbone will be replaced by "gated". Gated configuration files are
considerably different than routed configuration files. When that
transition is made, gated configuration files will replace routed files
on the nic.merit.edu:nsfnet/backbone.configuration directory.
The archived discussion list "db-disc(a)merit.edu" exists for discussion of
PRDB issues. Send a message to "db-disc-request(a)merit.edu" to subscribe.

Please send all requests for configuration changes to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu
using the NSFNET configuration forms. The forms are available on-line
from the nic.merit.edu machine. Use ftp and the anonymous login to get on the
machine. Do a "cd nsfnet/announced.networks" and get the files template.net,
template.net.README, template.gate, and template.as.
In order to more efficiently process your requests, we have moved to a
system which requires the use of template.net (NACR) version 7.0

Jane,
I don't know whether this is a bug or a feature, but your proposed
The Network Operations Forum of North America
could be abbreviated NOFNA and almost rhymes with NAFTA. If this connotes
a constructive effort to 'glue' networking within North America, then it
might be right. *And* it doesn't require congressional approval.

Hi
Scott and I have been working on trying to solve the whois problem involving
the network entites that we register and delegate to others. Our data is
heirarchical in nature and can be easily "referred" to other sites for the
particular record or additional information.
We have created a referral server and client (aka RWhois) to show this concept
and to get your comments on whether we should continue carrying on with this
idea. An alpha release of the RWhois client and server is available via
anonymous ftp from rs.internic.net as /pub/rwhois/rwhois-B0.1.tar.Z. It
contains the source for the rwhois server; the rwhois client; a partial,
edited copy of the freeWAIS-0.1 distribution; and an example data directory
that you can bring up the rwhois server quickly.
Both the client and server are in the Alpha stages and things will be
changing as we continue to develop this idea (some are listed below). If you
are interested and/or want to get announcements for the latest and greatest
versions, please join the rwhois(a)internic.net mailing list. To join,
send a request to:
rwhois-request(a)internic.net.
If you experience any bugs, send a note to the RWhois development team:
rwhois-bugs(a)internic.net
Things that will be added/changed in releases in the very near future:
Additional client-to-server commands:
- soa (gives soa and update information and where to send templates)
- badref (bad reference)
- recurref (recursive reference found)
- holdconnect (hold connection for interactive queries)
Additional client options:
- use of client-to-server commands
- better handling of server-to-client commands
Configuration details:
- Currently the configuration defaults to slam.internic.net port 3636 on
your particular queries. THIS WILL CHANGE to rs.internic.net port 4343
with the full-blown database (I want my IPC back!).
- The data is a SUBSET of the actual whois data. Do a -xfer to
see what data is in each RWhois server to test (a set is also in
the RWhois draft rs.internic.net:/pub/rwhois/draft-rwhois-00.txt.)
- To see examples of how RWhois works, look at the EXAMPLES file
(rs.internic.net:/pub/rwhois/EXAMPLES.
Addititional Documentation Coming:
- RWhois protocol specification
- RWhois client documentation
- RWhois server documentation
Also in the archive, we have a set of examples along with explanations
of what is happening in /pub/rwhois/EXAMPLES.
We hope you will examine and experiment with RWhois. Please send your comments
to rwhois(a)internic.net. We would like to hear from you!
Thanks for your time,
Mark
