Sorry for the cross posting but I thought input from all these groups might
be beneficial.
I'm looking for some type of simulation program that would enable a network
manager to view the route taken by packets in a complex IP network that
utilizes more than just hop-count metrics. Imagine a 100+ node network with
link metrics ranging from 1 to 2000. The goal is to determine (quickly and
easily) the path taken by a packet from any particular source point to any
particular destination point without having to manually add up all of the
metric combinations to determine the least cost path. Another goal is to be
able to create a link failure and observe the new least cost path. Another
goal is to be allow what-if scenarios where the network manager can change
the metric on a given link(s) and see the result.
Input to the simulation could be as simple as a flat file of point-to-point
links and their associated metrics. Output could also be a character-based
flat file. Graphical I/O would be ideal. Note: I'm not particularly
interested in simulating traffic patterns with varying inter-arrival rates
so something like Bones or CACI Network-II might be overkill. Besides, I
don't even know if they can provide what I'm looking for above (can they?).
On the other hand, viewing traffic patterns might come in handy later. Hmmmmm.

The external route flap reports that used to be generated up until Feb
are about to return. The code has been completely rewritten and is
capable of providing quite a bit more information. Reports now cover
24 hour periods beginning and ending at 00:00 CUT.
Currently it provides uptime/downtime for each announced NLRI plus
time during which the NLRI was down, but reachability was provided by
a less specific route. It also provides the total number of up
transitions, down transitions, and AS-path changes. For each AS-path
that the NLRI was reachable through, the report includes uptime and
number of transitions from down to up, up to down, from this AS-path
to another, and another AS-path to this.
There is code to provide accounting of which less specific routes
covered for an announced NLRI which was sometimes down, the amount of
time and number of transitions. This doesn't entirely work, so if it
shows up in a report ignore it for the moment.
Initially reports will be generated for NLRI having 50 or more
transitions in a day or 1 hour or more of down time. The down time
threshold will pick up switched service (or dial in) networks which
are reflected in global routing. This is arguably not a good idea,
but for those that insist on doing this, I can suppress specific
network numbers from the daily reports (if you provide a list).
A sample report is given below. Please comment (preferably by private
e-mail to keep list traffic down) on the format and what parts of this
are useful. I'm going to try to turn these on in a day or two.

Not to pick on anyone, but this was just a good report for
illustration generated from the May 26 data, which is the first full
day I collected. There are two parts (search for === with an editor
or mail pager). In the first part, you see nets that went up and down
a bunch of times and some that changed between AS paths very many
times, not nessecarily accumulating a lot of down time. The second
part is sorted by down time and you see networks that did have a lot
of down time.
In the reporting for each network, the first line gives the NLRI, AS
path currently reachable through (or the word "unreachable" - or
"unknown" if we lost logging information), the last date for which
status was known and the percent uptime. The next line gives the
total uptime, downtime, and time covered by an aggregate. Since there
was no previous days status, all of the networks in this report spent
some time in the unknown state until the first BGP update arrived
(normally up and down would add up to 24 hours). The remaining sets
of two line entries give the AS paths (currently unsorted - sorting by
uptime would make sense) by which the network has been reachable. The
first of these gives the AS path and uptime for that AS path, the
second gives the number of transitions involving that AS path (the
total uptimes for each AS path should add up to the uptime for the
NLRI).

The time of transition from the current NSFnet (ANSNet)
to the NAPs infrastructure nears. As part of efforts to
transition Network Server Providers and regional networks from
NSFNet (ANSNet backbone) to the NAPs, we at Merit need to obtain information
about your plans to connect to NAPs or a Network Service provider.
The proposed schedule for this transition has it beginning in July,
so time is short. The NSF funding and plans say we'll be done by
November, so we have a "challenging" time ahead. Please send me as
much information as you have so we can begin planning for the transition.
I will also be calling many of you during the next days to
find out as much we can before Thursday.
Below is a set questions regarding your transition plans to
NAP. Because so many unknowns about the NAPs still exist,
I will need to know as much as possible about the hardware
and software in routers, and routing plans. Please fill
in as much information as you know. Especially important
is the NAP(s) or NSP that you will be connecting to, and the
interface support in your routers.
The next NANOG meeting on June 2nd and 3rd will discuss in
detail the transition, and NAP plans. We will have NAP and
NSF people there to question. I would greatly
appreciate your responses within day, so we can do some
additional planning prior to that meeting. Any comments
about this are welcomed.
Merit will consider your response confidential and will not
circulate it beyond those at Merit working on transition plans
without your consent. One question below asks if you
would allow any of this information to be shared in the NANOG
meeting to help the network operators to plan the transition.

AADS Ann Arbor Office Location:
339 E. Liberty, Suite 310, the "Triad" building (next to Kaplan
testing). On the corner of Liberty and Division, in downtown Ann Arbor.
There is a parking lot just south of Liberty off of Division or Fifth
Avenue.
Directions:
From Detroit Metro airport, take 94 west for about 20 minutes.
Exit at State Street, turn right. Head all the way into downtown, then
State street forces traffic left onto Liberty. Go 3 blocks, and turn left
on 5th Ave. Take an immediate left into the parking lot.
