Many of the functions of the PRDB (including generation of router configurations for NSFNET) will be produced based on data from the Global Routing Registry. This change to the NSFNET Backbone service will involve the following changes: - The method for submitting new nets to be routed over AS690 will change. These changes are being made in order to migrate NSFNET customers and the global user community to a Global Routing Registry system, which will be more capable of supporting user needs after the termination of the NSFNET Backbone services in April 1995. All, ANS has a fix being exercised on our testnet for the routing software (known as "GateD" - gateway daemon) bug which caused the service disruption on Saturday, 12/3/94. The sequence of events leading to the problem is extremely obscure, as should be evident from the description below. This particular bug has been exercised only twice before in the history of our use of this software and will not appear again following deployment of the new software. We will implement a phased rollout of the new routing software. The rollout will begin this coming week on a small number of routers. During the course of the week the behavior of the new software will be observed. Pending successful results, a network-wide deployment will take place the week of 12/19. Steve Heimlich Manager, Infrastructure Development ANS ------- We have these prerequisites: - there is a network X which is announced into our backbone - there is a primary announcement (1), a secondary announcement (2), and a tertiary announcement (3) - one ENSS A acts as (1) and one ENSS B acts as both (2) and (3) (e.g., MAE-East may speak with Sprint and Alternet, which may be secondary and tertiary providers, respectively) - ENSS A must have a lower router ID than ENSS B (i.e., A < B) and this sequence of events: - ENSS A goes away non-gracefully such that iGP connectivity from the backbone to ENSS A is withdrawn but the iBGP session stays up (e.g., a power loss or circuit outage but not a clean GateD shutdown) - all routers notice loss of iGP connectivity to ENSS A within one minute and reset the next hop for route (1) to network X to be null, keeping the route in the BGP RIB in case iGP connectivity is restored - in addition to the above, ENSS B injects (2) into the backbone via iBGP - the exterior peer providing (2) withdraws the route to network X within 2 minutes of the initial AS 690 loss of iGP connectivity to ENSS A - ENSS B then injects (3) into the backbone via iBGP - all other routers see that the preference for network X has worsened and therefore traverse the BGP RIB to find the best current route to network X, attempting to verify as well that any route under consideration has a valid next hop - during the traversal, the routers mistakenly use an incorrect pointer to verify existence of a good next hop, not realizing that the former primary route (1) has a null next hop - due to a bug in some comparison logic, the formerly primary route (1) is selected from the BGP RIB if A > B and is installed into the kernel - the iBGP sessions from all backbone machines to ENSS A time out three minutes after loss of iGP connectivity to ENSS A - GateD crashes when it attempts to delete the mistakenly installed formerly primary route (1) from the kernel

Elise - I think it would be useful to reschedule the meeting, so that both meetings are in the same week. Especially for folks coming from Europe it is hard to justify to go to two meetings, if they are one week apart. At the last NANOG meeting in Ann Arbor, we decided to have a winter meeting in Boulder, CO. NCAR kindly offered to host the meeting and plans were finalized to have the meeting on Thursday and Friday, February 9 and 10, 1995. ISOC has proposed to host a Operations Conference in February (21-22) in San Diego, CA. The Description and Objectives of the conference are: >The Internet operations environment >is undergoing major transitions in architecture, >scale, and players worldwide. These transitions >are producing many new needs, issues and complex >multiple forums with overlapping boundaries. This >conference is convened as a means to bring together >all the parties and bodies of interest to: > >1) identify and discuss the emerging needs, issues >and forums through a set of panel sessions and >contributions; and > >2) take steps toward a set of "multilateral" >principles and arrangements among the participants >to provide for continued collaboration among all >the affected parties for a ubiquitous global Internet. I see 444 Bs, the rest Cs, 763 of which are obviously European, coming from the RIPE 193 and 194 blocks. Practically all announcements have AS path 701 174 378 (as seen from EUnet). Here's a hypothetical situation: Two sites (A.EDU and B.EDU) are trying to communicate. A.EDU is connected to ANSnet through PREPnet. B.EDU is connected to MCInet through NEARnet. A.EDU's technical contact calls up PREPnet and reports a problem getting to B.EDU -- PREPnet staff looks at the problem and finds that it is not with PREpnet's infrastructure. PREPnet passes the trouble call on up to ANS. ANS operations looks at the problem and discovers that the problem is not at the peering point (N.Y. NAP), but within MCInet's backbone. What should/would ANS do at this point? Is there any sort of agreement between ANS and MCI that they will report trouble calls like this and that they will be responded to? Are there any plans to include these sorts of things in the bilateral peering arrangements that come about at the NAPs? Type "whois -h prdb.merit.edu help" for details. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRDB CHANGES: (Updated October 25, 1994) In early December 1994, as part of the transition to the new Global Routing Registry (GRR), the Policy Routing Database (PRDB) will be retired. Many of the functions of the PRDB (including generation of router configurations for NSFNET) will be produced based on data from the Global Routing Registry. This change to the NSFNET Backbone service will involve the following changes: - The method for submitting new nets to be routed over AS690 will change. Instead of submitting a NACR to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu, you will need to submit a "route template" to auto-dbm(a)radb.ra.net . - Additions and entries to the new registry will be made by the Home AS which creates the route for each net, rather than being submitted by a AS690 peer AS. - Most of the PRDB reports (listed above) will no longer be produced. Equivalent information for most of these reports is available from the global Routing Registry. These are major changes to the system. These changes are being made in order to migrate NSFNET customers and the global user community to a Global Routing Registry system, which will be more capable of supporting user needs after the termination of the NSFNET Backbone services in April 1995.
