I have long advocated moving the root nameservers to XPs. It makes considerable traffic sense. But I have also always advocated that these servers be owned and operated by the XP, not by some third party. To do otherwise would be an administrative nightmare.... Kim" When we added ourselves to that list, we asked people who use the service to mail us. Just under 50% of those who've mailed since we put ourselves on the list are our customers (or customers of our customers), even though we've made an effort to notify our customers directly. Now, that might not be a true random sampling of the users, but it still tells something. So the list works... if you don't want to provide "public" services, adjust the server to allow connections only from your own IP blocks. -matthew kaufman matthew(a)scruz.net

We provide NTP services to all our customers, though. How many of those customers realize they are getting NTP services is a different question. They tend not to complain when the clock is correct, only when it is wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if this is similar to the thinking of other ISP's which provide NTP services to their customers, and aren't listed as public NTP servers. I'd be happy to send a listing into Dave Mills if folks think that is the right thing to do. Our marketing department loves to get the company name listed in as many places as possible. If the information in the following message means what I think it means in then somebody is colocating an entire new set of root nameservers at exchange points within the USA if not internationally. Can they do this? Or are they bluffing? If you want to comment on issues related to top level domain names but not related to network operations, please, please, please post those comments to newdom(a)iiia.org only even if it means replying twice to this message. Why aren't ISPs providing stratum 1 NTP service?

I just crossed the 200th machine syncing of one of my stratum 1 servers. I like providing the service and it doesn't cost very much for me to offer the service. the problem I have with this is that NTP hates asymmetric routing, so the likelyhood is that for most people outside the provider that serves this machine, NTP time is suspect. It seems to me that the days when running a GPS refclock into an NTP server was exotic are long past. Why don't providers give NTP stratum 1 service to their customers? Then I can at least shed some of the most suspect clients (it's the routing path not the user that is suspect.) In search of good time for all, Jerry

We were unable to find a WWV capable clock for under a few thousand dollars. The old Heathkit one ($300 or so?) was no longer available and all of the other ones I found mentioned in the xntp docs were in the thousands. You mention using a GPS clock, while I've been looking into WWV. Can you point me to some, hopefully inexpensive, hardware that we could use to provide this service? -David
