NMS's usually have IP ranges that "should" be set, If a network manager knows ones network/s then one "should" restrict the discovery to one's networks and sub-net's. ARP table, NIS and router discovery can also be controlled. I must admit that when I recived my first NMS ( Spectrum ) I let it run wild! ... Not good. It seems to me that the need for network managers is pushing companys to hire green people, and we have growing pains that cascade problems out. Then there are the "bad people" that are attempting to crack the "ice". Knowing that there will allways be people who are motivated by "breaking down walls" , we must find ways to minimize their actions. How does one prevent the probes from chewing-up the router's CPU time? - or - preventing the probes from getting that far? Oh well ..... I love it! .. ACK!! |}

Peter, What you said is true if the drain system treats all fluids equally. But consider the difference between these fluids. It is much more important that sewage water, with its Constant Flow Rate, get to its intended destination and not leech its pollutants into the ground. Storm water, with a bursty Variable Flow Rate, will not cause environmental damage if leeched into the ground during overflow cases. What is needed is a drain system which can distinguish between storm water and sewage. Ad Hoc, eDNS, AlterNIC and the bunch

Sorry to bring this up, it may be out of the confines of the NANOG realm, but since the bulk of name lookups come from major network providers such as Sprint, MCI, UUnet and the rest, this seems like the logical place to post this. Over the past 10 months, there has been escalating talk about the new self appointed registries out there. Major news papers, magazines and other periodicals have been publishing that "the change is coming". Ultimately, the actual change rests at the hands of every user who runs a nameserver, for they are the ones who actually have the root server cache. A recent article in the Star Tribune, I believe stated that MCI is siding with the Internet Ad Hoc society and is going to support these new registries. Now, MCI is a major player in the US and if they actually DO start adding new root servers to their cache, there might be a major change in the Internet. I'm curious as to how many other network providers are even thinking about changing their root server caches just because some self appointed society tells them to. I'm confused as to how this sort of thing got SO out of control. I have yet to see an article anywhere countering these people. As a lot of you know, the Internet is all politics. What people see in real life really effects them when they go online. I have talked to a large number of people and they all believe that these new TLDs and registries will be appearing in the next 3 to 4 months. The people on this list have a tremendous amount of power to change the Internet, but unless you use this force in real life to educate the public, well... things like this will continue to happen. If the Internet Ad Hoc society actually does convince everyone to switch over, then there is a major problem. Does this mean any group of people who wants to make rules and can get enough publicity can make it happen without any sort of actual reasoning behind it? Hello, I am trying to figure out why, after moving my connection to ACSI, that everything has slowed down so much. What I see on a traceroute is that my big time spells are at mae-east.agis.net, cpe3-fddi-0.washington.mci.net, and core1-hssi3-0.washington.mci.net. The document is part of a plan developed by the International Ad Hoc Committee (IAHC), a group of Internet experts formed to consider issues brought on by the rapid growth of the Internet, that calls for the creation of additional top level names and the formation of a structure to allow competing companies to register Internet names. Initial signers of the documents establishing the new system are the Internet ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the Internet Society (ISOC), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the International Trademark Association (INTA). They will be joined by representatives from industry, government, and other organizations who have indicated their intent to sign and participate. Three major corporations, Digital Equipment Corporation, MCI, and UUNET are among the early endorsers of the plan.
