So far most of the systems have been coming out of start ups that end up going for the money. The MBONE tools are OK but from where I sit are useless as the end users don't have MBONE. This is an operational issue and you can programme your Cisco's to do it :) If MBONE is to be a serious contender the ISPs must deliver it, then us content providers that are wasting tons of net bandwith could become nicer netizens and wouldn't use the unicast products that end users are asking for. I think people are getting a bit heavy with the not so bad guys, it could be worse - you could be looking at a Microsoft only system instead. Jeremy, Not to put too fine a point on it, but the nanog archives weren't really a solution for me because I needed quotes from people on the ATM issue, quotes that I could use in my story. Would you have preferred if I had cribbed someone's old nanog post without their permission, which is what I would have needed to do given the reality of news deadlines? I don't think so. I also was seeking reaction to Mr. Feldman's comment, which the archives would obviously not offer. Unlike many of my colleagues in the computer trade press, I am rabid about sourcing and accuracy. Thankfully, a number of people on the nanog list were very helpful in this regard. Hi all, I lurked on this morning's state of the net presentation, and I'd like to do a short piece on it for Wired News (http://www.wired.com) The MAE "fragility" and transition to ATM seems a contentious issue with many in the audience. Is there someone on the list who would like to offer their perspective on this, especially Mr. Feldman's observation in the Q&A that "the gigaswitch has reached the end of its useful life." What, briefly, is the controversy around moving to ATM for high-bandwidth data needs? If you reply, please do so with the assumption that I may quote you for publication. Sprintlink will do either AS or IP based filters to their BGP peers. From their bgpform.txt: --- 8. Do you prefer AS (see 8a) or IP (see 8b) based filters*? [ ] AS filters - answer question 8a [*] IP filters - answer question 8b * All customers are filtered based on either AS path or IP address. AS filters allow customers to announce any blocks they acquire but can lead to problems if the customer configuration announces other provider routes to us (creating transit across the customer) or our own routes back to us (creating a black hole). IP filters allow customers to modify the AS announcements. Both methods have their advantages and we prefer to set up IP filters because it makes the customer configurations simpler and avoids possible transit/black hole problems. --- If the customer has chosen AS based filtering then they can announce any addresses at will, causing this type of problem. Erroneous BGP advertisement

Currently, one half of our /18 is being erroneously advertised by Sprint (207.228.0.0/19). This, naturally, is causing us no end of trouble. Sprint, meanwhile, blames a third party. This has been going on for over 24 hours. First, if you're reading this and you're the culprit, please stop advertising 207.228.0.0/19. Second, I'm soliciting advice from others who have experienced this. How did you get results from the culprits? Can you recommend an attorney who is familiar with the issues, in case we decide to recover our lost revenue stream?
