quick question?

First of all, i know that this is not the best place to ask this quesiton, but it is the only place that can quickly come to mind... I have a customer who has a block of 62 ip addresses (206.206.162.130 -> 206.206.162.190 and one for network/brodcast). They are current expanding their network, and need around 30 more ip addresses. I went ahead and allocated them the following IP address pool (207.66.81.144 -> 207.66.81.174 with network/brodcast address.) I attempted to use the new address on a Apple Macintosh (PowerMac 6500/75) and it erturned an error message saying that the router was not on the subnet, and that it could not use the new address. I know I should remember how to fix that, but I am not sure what to do.... Any help or guidence would be greatly appreciated. European/Asian equivalents to NANOG?

There is, of course, worldwide input into the NANOG list. Are there equivalent and active lists for European and Asian ISPs? If so, how does one sign up? I'm giving an European routing tutorial and want to be able to refer students to appropriate lists/web pages on exterior routing in their regions. IEPG, of course, also applies. Thanks. Howard

Over the last four years cable cuts and other physical outages seem pretty randomly distributed between AT&T, MCI, Sprint and Worldcom. Some years one carrier has more, other years a different carrier has more. However the affect of an outage has not been equally distributed. Each carrier has its strengths in different markets. Worldcom happens to be fairly strong in the Internet circuit market so you read about Worldcom cable cuts on Internet lists. If you were a financial type, you would have thought MCI had a lot of problems. Remember the cable cut in Manhatten earlier this summer, it affected some Internet traffic but the brokers on wall street were livid. If you were an airline, you would have thought AT&T had a lot of problems. Sprint has problems, but I don't know which market segment it is really strong in. Salespeople for each of the above companies are usually more than willing to give you information about the reliability problems of their competitors. Getting information about their own company is harder. I doubt backhoes or gophers will show any favoritism for or against cable installed new competitors such as Qwest or Level3. As far as I have heard from MFS, the cut is on a ring between Bolling Green and Fredericksburg. I also understand that it has been repaired. What kind of router is your customer using? Cisco routers allow you to define "secondary" IP addresses in addition to the primary IP address for an interface. You could use this feature to configure your router to have two logical subnets sharing your single physical subnet. Then on the Mac you can configure the Open Transport TCP/IP control panel to use either the primary or secondary router IP address for the "router address" field - depending on whether the Mac's IP address is in the subnet of the primary or secondary router IP address. -Richard
