If you are having trouble navigating through NIPC's web site. - Click on the "Enter" graphic on the front page. - Click on the "publications" graphic in the upper center frame. Look for the vertical list of words beginning with "Welcome." Publications is near the bottom of the list - The lower frame will change to NIPC Publications. Scroll the lower frame to find the list of publications. Get your PDF decoder ready. CyberNotes: Network Infrastructure Protection Publication

After making fun of the FBI for mostly keeping us up to date on important dates in history, did you know April 19 is the anniversary of battle of Cambridge between American Minutemen the British in 1775? Is there any date between 1775-1783 that some battle didn't take place somewhere? I thought I would compliment the FBI on their new publication. CyberNotes is a bi-weekly publication of the National Infrastructure Protection Center reporting on (I won't use the word hacker) exploit scripts, viruses, and other cyber vulnerabilities. For those network security folks who keep close track of these things, there may not be much new information. The FBI isn't going to tell you anything you couldn't find yourself on the public Internet. But for the rest of us, it is a nice summary of what's new. Knowing the difficulty the FBI has had in releasing any information over the last few years, this is truely a heroic effort by somebody at the NIPC. I know what you mean, Greg. A friend of mine tried to regester a domain. He filled out the forms, mailed them in, kept the reply. What he didn't notice that even though the domain name was correct in the body of the message, the SUBJECT line of the reply from Network Solutions had the domain name misspelled. They'd dropped a letter. The registration seemed to go through just fine, but after the burp two days ago the domain now shows up with the misspelling! Not only won't Network Solutions fix the problem, they will gladly accept his registering the *correct* domain, but will not refund the payment he made back when the first domain was correctly spelled. Of course, he's got to pay AGAIN if he wants to register the correctly spelled domain, again. So told by an aledged "manager", who said the next in the chain of command would be a VP, and Bobby-Ray was in a meeting and couldn't be disturbed. Curt-

What not to put in your datacenter (Re: Datacenter discussion forum?)

Massively off-topic, but I was doing a bit of research on another project and came across this fun-filled fact today. Between 1992 and 1996 there were 14 fires in electronic equipment rooms caused by COOKING EQUIPMENT! Today's duh-you've-got-to-be kidding-hint: do not put stoves, hot plates, ovens or rotisseries (that's correct, rotisseries) in your equipment rooms. If your network operations staff want some roasted chicken, may I suggest a good resturant or a seperate kitchen, not the computer room. The good news was dedicated computer and telecommunication facilities averaged less than $0.44 million in direct fire losses per year. Compared to $21 million in direct fire losses per year from electronic equipment fires in other structures (e.g. general businesses, hospitals, hotels, universities, etc). In case your marketing people don't get it, I just gave the folks building (good) co-locate facilities a huge gift for their salespeople in this paragraph. InterNIC Weekend Outage?

Have a guy that had this emailed from his ISP. If this is in fact true we all could have some very unhappy customers in the comming days. I haven't personally experienced any troubles yet form any customers but I plan to keep an eye out. I'd also be interested to see if anyone else can confirm this report or has further details. Greg ---------------------------------------------------------- Over the weekend the Internic, the registry that handles all .com, .org, and .net domain names, had a power outage. Allegedly, their backup generators actually made the situation worse, computers crashed, and data was lost. They won't officially admit to it, but word from some of the bigger ISPs is that approximately 18,000 domains were inadvertantly deleted. It seems to have mostly effected domains that were coming due for renewal in March. Definition for "unattended operation"

Although some companies claim to "man" their POPs or NOCs 24 hours a day, seven days a week; I've found other industries have run into some problems with the definition of "unattended operation." It may not be in the Oxford English Dictionary, but it does show up in some safety standards and government regulations. Unattended Operation - A procedure or operation at which there is no person present who is knowledgeable regarding the operation and emergency shutdown procedures. Just having a warm body present isn't enough to claim an attended operation from a safety or government regulation perspective. And I suspect also from a network operations perspective. As far as listing additional contact information in the WHOIS database. I encourage providers to exchange contact information for the person(s) who is knowledgeable about the process and emergency shutdown procedures. However, I am beginning to think the WHOIS database operated by NSI no longer best serves the network operation community. I see little purpose in adding additional fields to a database which is so full of useless information already. Listing good contact information just results in those contacts becoming overwhelmed by spammers, vigilantes and UUNET telemarketing.
