Hi, I am looking for recommendations on a small "footprint" (1U) device that is directly accessible via ethernet/IP and dial-in. It will be hosted in a remote data center to access the consoles of several cisco routers and UNIX servers remotely. I have a feeling somebody has built a cheap and reliable linux/bsd/unix based device with sshd, ethernet port and 8 or 16 serial ports. Please send your replies privately. Since no scripts to do what I was looking for have been forthcoming, I broke down and decided to prove to myself I still know perl. Find attached the following: flow-smurf.pl Takes a sorted output (simple unix sort) from "sh ip cache flow" and finds what it believes are smurf amplifiers. The thresholds for number of bytes, number of flows, prefix length, etc are all tunable. Outputs a list of suspect prefixes. smurf-email.pl Takes a list of prefixes, looks them up in whois, and prints a list of contact email addresses and the associated prefixes. Also emails the contacts if you specify a return address. Requires ipw. I was trying to find a way to check whether an IP address is used by some host without actually probing it. DNS sounds like a good way to go, but I'v heard that domain "IN-ARPA.ADDR" is not well maintained and updated. Is that true? If so, how un-dependable it could be? dup packets

i reported a problem with packet duplication to the gridnet (worldcom) noc, and they checked it and they said everything is fine, some hosts give duplicate echo replies to pings. i get either one or three duplicates. are there any hosts, routers, firewalls, load balancers, etc. that do this? i couldn't find anything in the archives on this subject. when i tried pinging from locations on other backbones i didn't receive dups so i feel the problem is within gridnet. i am reporting here as i would like to know if any others are suffering this problem. also, many hosts and networks may be receiving unnecessary traffic from duplicate acks as there is duplication of tcp packets also. most of the problems are through connections from east to west coast on atm circuits--see traces below. other unfriendly behavior--their default route appears to be pb-nap.eni.net. most unroutable packets, including reserved and rfc1918, are routed there--traces below. this morning, when g.root-servers.net was unreachable for a few minutes (via gridnet, did anyone else see it disappear?) i watched those packets go to eni. (sorry, didn't capture the trace.) are they selling /dev/rj0 service? this (everything above) has been happening for at least several months. matt sommer sysadmin webkorner.com PING Well, I, and many other people on NANOG where this has been discussed over the last several weeks would tend to disagree with you. While your answer certainly reflects the current state of the database, it appears that you may not have understood the intent of the message. I am suggesting that it may be time to consider the addition of those fields as a change. I wanted to solicit input from InterNIC and ARIN, as well as NANOG. At this point, I will probably attempt to put it through the RFC process. The idea seemed to have substantial support from the community. There were some voices of dissent, but most of them revolved around the fact that it didn't solve all the problems or didn't solve certain problems it wasn't intended to solve. There was one voice opposed on the basis that all contact information for domains should be private, but this opinion doesn't appear to be widely represented among the community. Just how are we supposed to find the POCs for a domain now? 3) They are causing service effecting outages with NO NOTICE to US, their customers. This is getting real %^&*# old, real %^*# fast. They have a pretty good track record of getting contentious issues resolved in a rational and workable manner. Actually, CIX seems to be well-positioned to do exactly that. Now, telcos have way too many lawyers who are loath to work a little too harder to be on the right side of the Sherman Act, but i suspect their ISP departments by now feel the pain - how many customers bother their help desks to get their DNS issues resolved? --vadim
