The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. Weather: Any Lessons?

Heck, I'm starting to feel like disasters follows me around. I was in Las Vegas today for a little R&R, and the entire city came to a halt because of a few inches of rain. 3 inches in one day, when Las Vegas normally gets 4 inches total a year. the brand new hotel had water pouring through leaks in its roof, and the fire alarm was sounding as I left for the airport. But the casino never missed a roll of the dice. Instead of saying people in the north/south/east/west don't know how to handle heat/snow/rain/wind, can we look for some lessons we can learn. [Besides, stay far away from what ever city Sean is visiting this week.] During the east coast heat wave, there were many different incidents. Let me try to summarize a few items. 1. Public Relations/Communication breakdown increased the frustration many customers felt. 2. Planning estimates didn't show the peak demand would go as high as it did. 3. Systems running near/at capacity are under more strain (Duh?), which further reduces your reserve margin because something is going to break. 4. While fixing one problem, other problems can happen. 5. WEATHER: rolling blackouts along the East Coast

Due to the heat, high electric use, and the loss of some generators some east coast power companies are into their reserve limits, which means a loss of a generation plant will cause an indefinite blackhout. Several utilities have started some rolling black outs in their service regions, voluntary and mandatory load dumping and voltage reductions. Each 'planned' rolling black out is expected to last less than 20 minutes, but the electric companies are warning customers service may be interrupted up to four hours. The heat is supposed to break this afternoon/evening. However the front will bring a line of strong thunderstorms through the east coast, which creates its own problems. All of our east coast POPs have stayed up, so far. Some Bell Atlantic COs in North Jersey have experience brown-outs as well. Local and tandem switched voice are unaffected, but Frame Relay and SMDS equipment took hits. Peering issues, bis

I've been contacted by many of you with regard to this peering issue. The time has come for the ISPs to work closer together. As each of our networks grow, the need for peering *increases*. The networks that are exhibiting the fastest growth are those that encourage peering. I'm sure that most of you know this. I'm not opposed to setting some criteria for peering, and making that publically available. I am adverse to peering negotiations that occur "under cover of darkness" (NDA), or that are arbitrary (handshake agreements). I'm proposing that we form a unified front to negotiate these issues. Sort of a MLPA - but on a worldwide front. Let's take this off the NANOG list, though, unless there are strong objections. I'll set up a mailing list of interested parties, and we should get together over the next 30 days with at least a meeting in the bay area (SFO), one in New York or Washington, and one in Europe. I'll host them, details too be announced shortly.
