the following two messages were recieved by me (and more likely many others) the author, Joe Baptista, is a known loon in the Toronto area. i'm not sure if he has reformed or if this is some scam he is running. We are a private network research facility. I am contacting you with respect to the BIND 1999 Survey of Internet hosts and ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. We conduct and maintain the BIND (Berkley Internet Name Daemon) survey databases. Over the years we have used the BIND surveys to assist the United States Government and the Department of Defense in closing security holes in the domain name system infrastructure. This year we have received financial assistance which has allowed us to conduct an extensive enumeration of internet domain name servers. You are receiving this message because servers where you are listed as the SOA (source of authority) have been included in the most recent BIND data. We would like to invite you to pickup a report from us which details all information available on your servers as reported in the public dns system. The report includes a number of tests results from queries made on your name servers and provides details on the status of any failed or passed tests. If you are running BIND versions which can be hacked, or are insecure, those detail are reported and supporting information provided to assist you in closing potential security holes. A separate message has been emailed to you with instructions on how to extract information on your servers from our databases. It's fairly simple, all you have to do is reply to the message and keep the subject line intact. We have emailed it with a subject header labeled CONFIDENTIAL. In the event you may want to forward this message to others, you can do so without inadvertently allowing access to your database records. We hope that you find this information of assistance. Our intention is to fix the numerous problems encountered in the public domain name system. This year we enumerated in excess of 200,000 name servers. Of those 25,000 have misconfigured SOA records, 12,000 do not resolve, 62,000 are no longer operational and 22,000 can be easily hacked. - ICANN - In conclusion I would like to ask that you take an active role in Internet Governance. The United States Government has assigned control of the Internet Domain System and Infrastructure to ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which represents big business interests, trademark lawyers and public telephone companys. ICANN intends to tax domain names and the ip infrastructure. To date a number of regulation have been imposed on internet registrars which take away existing rights and claims to second level domain names. As a result of these efforts, a number of organizations have started alternate root infrastructures and intend in competing with ICANN. This November 1-4 ICANN will be holding public meetings in Los Angeles. If you live in or near LA, please try to attend. If you don't, you can participate via remote. Please help us get the word out. For those running an 'umbrella' package (OV/Tivoli/CA/etc) I'm just wondering if there's a common ratio between the number of managed nodes in a reasonably dynamic environment and the number of people actually maintaining the management package (not the users). As an aside, I'm a bit curious as to the favorite umbrellas in use. thanx, -ls-

Major asia pacific public exchange points

What are the, or are there any, major international public exchange points in the Asia-Pacific region? I know about the wwww.ep.net web page listing lots of exchange points. For example, an exchange point with at least two multi-regional/multi-continent ISPs. Europe has the LINX, AMS-IX, dGIX, etc.

The Program: Internet Y2K Wrap-up The Internet will be used to maintain communications during the transition from 1999 to 2000. Do you think it's _NEW_ for me? I'v want just to highlight this point... Here in Russia .ru sub-root name servers just get funds from the *.ru fee's; and it's wonderful (not for me but in principle) why . owners don't see at least 50% of the *. fee money. And no doubt .com fee should not be 50$/year (for the NETSOL company which MUST pay this fee). // Sorry, I'v add 'nanog' to this post because it's really the question Internet // society should ask now, when a lot of different fee's was introduced. Simon, You missed the question. Timothy is interested in finding companies who have deployed the latest generation of edge devices. These devices specialize in QoS, VPNs and more intelligent(CPU intensive) features. A GSR is not in the same classification since this router is meant for the core. Vendors competing in the edge space are Shasta, Ennovate, Cosine and Unisphere to name a few. In the end, we've decided to go with Cisco GSR's. The flaws we tended to find were with not enough enough memory to hold full routing tables, or a limit on the number of route entries. Another flaw was mentioned with regard to the route caching - something about needing to hold in table of which IP addresses were on which port (usual switch behaviour). Reminder: RPSL Transition

A final reminder for users of the RADB database service: at 12:00:00 a.m. EDT on November 1, 1999, the whois.radb.net and auto-dbm(a)radb.net services will default to the Routing Policy Specification Language (RPSL) database. This means that whois queries to whois.radb.net after November 1 will return RPSL objects. RIPE-181 queries will still be possible after November 1 via whois queries to whois-ripe181.radb.net and email submissions to auto-ripe181(a)radb.net. In addition, between 11/1/99 and 1/1/00, RIPE-181 submissions will be auto-converted and folded into the RPSL database. Users need to be aware of this, as corresponding RPSL entries will be overwritten with the auto-converted RIPE-181 objects. You will need to *RECONFIGURE* your tools to explicitly query whois-ripe181.radb.net and send RIPE-181 submissions to auto-ripe181.radb.net. During the changeover, the whois.radb.net DNS entry will be changed to point to the production RPSL database. Because of DNS latency, there will be a period of time when all resolvers have not received the new DNS entry IP address. During this transition period, some users may want to manually configure the IP address used by their query tools.
