Tony, I noticed on your page that you have done some work with the ArrowPoint product. I wondered how that worked out for you. I slammed it and it failed pretty miserably, but I couldn't help but think that it must be working for some solutions since people are still buying it. It did OK for WWW to a point, but we LB'd a set of Heavy FTP servers and is had a problem of not releasing the connections after time out making it so that nobody could establish an FTP sessions. To make matters worse, this would be followed by a crash and reboot which I would at least have hoped would reset the FTP service, but didn't. Since the www service ended up misbehaving quite often with more than 30 rule sets and simple FTP loadbalancing seemed to be a challenge for it, I'm wondering what everyone is ending up using it for now... I think that MediaOne is using it for a caching service manager. What are you using them for? -Karyn

Oh... well, uh,... 3DNS. I didn't get very deep into 3DNS, but it sounds like you have. Question. It seems from what I have read that 3DNS wants to do all DNS for the domain zone including MX, CNAMEs, etc. Do you know if it supports SRV records (Windows 2000 machines managed by ADS are happier when they can manage these records), ACLs for the zone record IXFRs from the 2000 machines, etc? F5's DNS3 product does some of this. If you are talking about internal/external proxy only, the BIND9 includes this capability. What we're trying to do here is provide a back-up only approach for Internet service via NAT and VRRP/HSRP at the customer premise. The problem is with people hosting applications on-site that require DNS (www,MX,etc.). Trying to avoid using BGP as a back-up mechanism in this case (for obvious reasons), if I could find a product that could act as a authoritative DNS with a TTL of 0 or something, and only send replies for applications when the primary IP was down or unreachable, and then statically NAT our address over to the primary address at the customer premise, I think we could have a pretty good solution for providing back-up Internet service, including web, mail, etc. applications. I will definitely take a look at all the listed products and would appreciate anyone's input on this matter. Thanks! Brantley

Products are also available from Alteon, Cisco (Distributed Director) and Resonate.
