The sent out the following at 11:36am (Pacific): At 09:40 PDT on Friday, September 8, 2000, Global Center, a Gloabal Crossing company, began experiencing a Network Service Oautage. The cause of this outage is a fiber cut. Our engineers are actively working on it. Some customer sites hosted in or transiting the following location(s) may be affected during this incident: San Francisco, Ca (SFO1) Sunnyvale, Ca (SNV,1,2,3) Kansas City, Mo (KCY1) Another notification will be sent out giving additional information as soon as it becomes available. Traditionally telco facilities do not provide no-break AC power. If you want reliable power in a carrier style facility you need to use DC power, and dual-feed DC powered equipment. I do not think this is a change from the existing MAE facilities. I don't think MFS provides no-break AC power in either the existing gallows road or south market MAE's. Other providers which appear affected (directly, or indirectly due to congestion or related services) include Abovenet Exodus GlobalCrossing/Center Mindspring/Earthlink UUNET Even more providers may be affected, I just didn't have a convient way to check on their status. You should view the list above as those providers willing to make outage information readily available, not as a list of problem providers. The worse providers may be those who try to keep outages "secret." Anyone know any more? Is it actually GBLX or were they riding someone else's fiber that was cut? Their NOC said they wouldn't know anything for another 30 minutes. ?? Our web site's outa commision. Thanks Global Center for your robust fault tolerant design. (Grrrrr.)

Also appears to be affecting our Global Crossing PRIs. So our dial-up network services are hosed. SIGCOMM & networking in Latin America

Hi folks: While I'm often reminded that network operators don't have time to read papers, much less write them, I thought I'd take a small risk and let you know about a new workshop. ACM SIGCOMM is kicking off a workshop on networking in Latin America -- it is a research workshop with a focus on the unique networking problems of Latin America (a far cry from the fiber rich networking diet we have here in the States). Also, speaking of papers -- if you haven't yet read Craig Labovitz's paper on BGP taking N-factorial messages to deal with a topology change, you'd probably find it of interest.
