Tommorrow's edition (Oct 19) of the Wall Street Journal has yet another article about Verizon's 140 West Street office. "Others say the extensive damage to Verizon's hub demonstrated that it is dangerous to rely on one company. They point out that only with the help of smaller competitors did parts of New York get their dial tones back. "We have buildings that would have been waiting for Verizon to get the service up if there were not alternatives," says Agostino Cangemi, the New York City commissioner in charge of telecom franchising One interesting thing I found during my research since September 11 is the Internet held up well because of its extensive use of alternate providers. Verizon tends to be very expensive, so ISPs needing lots of "cheap" bandwidth purchased service from a variety of competitors. Much of this was not planned, nor did ISPs have a clue where their circuits ran. It just happened due to Adam Smith's invisible hand. That's not to say CLECs didn't have problems. AT&T/TCG was walloped hard, and several ISPs have essentially abandoned some TCG facilities because they won't be repaired for a long time. MFN lost a huge amount of fiber. Worldcom won't say how bad MFS/Brooks/etc was hit but Worldcom customers report their circuits were out for 3-4 weeks and may not be repaired until the end of the year.

Communities

Hi, I'm looking for information about the way networks use communities in BGP. It seems that many of the larger networks only use communities to supply their customers with a mechanism to adjust the local preference to indicate which connection is preferred when a customer connects over more than one link (something that can also be done with the MED). How many networks are there that use communities to indicate where (which interconnect point) a route was learned? And how many networks use this information if their upstream provides it? And how about things like congestion? Is there any need for more "well known" communities? TIA, Iljitsch van Beijnum

yesterday, at work at about 11edt, abha ahuja suffered a serious seizure of unknown cause. there are many details, very few of them cheering. they do not know causes, they do not know much, only the damage, and it is not good. and details are not appropriate for a broadcast medium anyway. she is in the cardiac icu, and the prognosis is bleak. my experience is that, in this time, her family will be drawing close, and outsiders, which we are, are felt as intrusive. should she make it to a recovery state, our wishes, flowers, food baskets, ... will be much appreciated. think good thoughts. randy

All, Just wanted to apologize for my previous flame post to Marc Quibell and sending it to the list. After looking at the mail header (and thinking "surely he didn't post this to NANOG"), I sent it to the list because it appeared he posted to NANOG. Thanks, but those products are not routers and switches... they TEST the capabilities of routers and switches. I'll try to remember that tidbit of using routers AND switches. It might come in handy one day... glad you pointed that one out. Have you considered the possibility of writing a white paper on that idea and sharing it with the group? I'm not an idiot.
