Why do so few mail providers support Port 587?

Although RFC2476 was published in December 1998, its amazing how few mail providers support the Message Submission protocol for e-mail on Port 587. Even odder, some mail providers use other ports such as 26 or 2525, but not the RFC recommended Port 587 for remote authenticated mail access for users. Large mail providers like AOL, GMAIL and Yahoo support authenticated mail on port 587; and some also support Port 465 for legacy SMTP/SSL. But a lot of universities and smaller mail providers don't. They still use SMTP Port 25 for roaming users. With AT&T, Earthlink, COX, Netzero and other ISPs filtering port 25 for years, I would have thought most mail providers would have started supporting Port 587 by now. What can be done to encourage universities and other mail providers with large roaming user populations to support RFC2476/Port 587? What can be done to encourage the mail client software programers (i.e. Outlook, Eudora, etc) to make Port 587 the default (or at least the first try) and let the user change it back to port 25 (or automatically fallback) if they are still using a legacy mail server. Sendmail now includes Port 587, although some people disagree how its done. But Exchange and other mail servers are still difficult for system administrators to configure Port 587 (if it doesn't say click here for Port 587 during the Windows installer, its too complicated).

So...how much of the revenue stream is built around the actual facilities (i.e. copper, fiber, etc) ownership monopoly? Shouldn't senior staff recognize the short-sightedness of building one revenue stream from two distinct sources: one content delivery and one plant ownership? Sell access first for a profit and then add ala carte services for a profit, don't mix them. As troublesome as VoIP may (appear) to be, imagine video. Very high duty-cycle, multi-megabit streams. "36ccs", so to speak. But, content creators could sell directly to end users. Potentially, no cable company, no TV networks. Perhaps even the studio structure will collapse. A lot depends on how well the FTTH providers, and their long-haul backbone partners do their job. Whether they embrace disruptive change, or resist it as an annoyance to their routine.

Sure, the other two buildings still work. Hex has had a history of power problems. I'm in Sovereign and it's been OK so far. Of course we have other buildings as anything can break (e.g. 25 Broadway) "We host ecommerce sites turning over million of pounds, pay redbus a significant amount of money for their service" sounds like they need to spend some of those millions on site redundacy brandon

James, we are not picking ASes at random. The AS-set announcements are part of new techniques we are developing for ISPs who wish to discover how their prefixes are seen by the rest of the Internet. We believe this will come to be a useful tool for operators. However, since this is still work in progress, and in scientific research there is no room for second place, I can't really reveal any more than that at the moment. I would like to point out, though, that our research group does have a proven track record in the field network discovery (examples available on request), and has created software useful to the operator community such as BGPlay [1][2].
