If so, set up local server in RFC 1918 space, make it the preferred one, with MS's"real" server as the alernate. If _not_, one could play the same game through DNS -- with a 'wsus.{isp}.com' that resolves differently for queries from inside your address-space than it does for queries from outside your space. for an 'inside' query, it returns an A for the local server, for an 'exteral'query, it returns a CNAME pointing to MS's real server. In both scenarios, the customer system keeps working without requiring any further changes when the customer is 'no longer a customer'. In the first there is a query delay, while it fails over to te 2nd adress -- as upate tends torun in background "no huhu" applies. In the 2nd case, you take an "occasional" hit from a former customer doing a DNS query. With a _large_ TTL on the CNAME record, this should be 'way down in the noise' Has the potential to get a bunch of traffic off upstream links.

Visualizing the routing table

Hi Folks, I'd like to share with you some recent work I've done on visualizing the routing table. http://maps.measurement-factory.com/gallery/Routeviews/ As the page says, I use the routeviews snapshots to create maps showing the locations and size of each prefix in the table. The IPv4 address space is mapped into 2-D with a Hilbert curve (as seen on xkcd). I have maps for snapshots going back to early 2004 and an animation that shows the evolution over time. Duane W.

ARIN has set up a wiki at http://www.getipv6.info to publish information that will help ISPs, large and small in implementing IPv6 and migrating to an IPv6 Internet. I have collected info from some recent emails to the NANOG list, and other sources, and published it on the wiki. Since this is a wiki, anyone with something useful can contribute. One of the stranger things a field tech of ours encountered wasn't necessarily bad wiring (although it's not great), but the fact that the demarc was located next to the toilet in the bathroom.
