We will have follow up interactions that should help determine expertise levels. We want to make sure that our recruiting efforts do not unnecessarily exclude people. Overtime we need to make sure our trials include people with varying degrees of expertise. One of the goals of our IPv6 trials, as we mention on www.comcast6.net, is to exercise the technologies that are essential to extend IPv6 capable services to subscribers. This step is an important one as we plan for wide spread deployment. I have only anecdotal information regarding 45/8. 45/8 is assigned to Interop, and as such it is brought up-and-down as Interop's shows move in and out of convention centers. Starting at least 5 years ago, it has proved impractical to start announcing 45/8, since this causes immediate and massive amounts of traffic to flow into the show network. The last time that I know that the full 45/8 was announced, traffic settled down to about a full T3's worth of bandwidth before the network engineers started announcing smaller /16 chunks as actually needed. Even /16 has proved impractical while the network is being built-out, before the show, because the build-out site typically has T1-ish bandwidth---again, saturated with a /16 being announced. This information is very different from the RIPE Labs experiment which I think showed that certain "obvious" addresses (1.1.1.1 seemed to be the kicker in my short reading of their report) were being mis-used heavily. But I suspect that 27/8 would have similar issues to 45/8. However, it is not clear to me that this is different from any other /8. In other words, for those that have a /8, they probably DO have to put up with a T3-worth of garbage flowing their way before they move the first useful packet. I've found gmail is the current favored account amongst forum spammers; I have to assume they are doing nothing about abuse complaints because I find it quite unlikely that the forums I operate just happen to be the first ones that get abused by accounts signed up with gmail addresses. I report each one to their abuse address, probably goes to bit bucket. gmail is probably still 'beta' though so it's ok to let spammers use that too. David

Mitigating human error in the SP

Hello NANOG, Long time listener, first time caller. A recent organizational change at my company has put someone in charge who is determined to make things perfect. We are a service provider, not an enterprise company, and our business is doing provisioning work during the day. We recently experienced an outage when an engineer, troubleshooting a failed turn-up, changed the ethertype on the wrong port losing both management and customer data on said device. This isn't a common occurrence, and the engineer in question has a pristine track record. This outage, of a high profile customer, triggered upper management to react by calling a meeting just days after. Put bluntly, we've been told "Human errors are unacceptable, and they will be completely eliminated. One is too many." I am asking the respectable NANOG engineers.... What measures have you taken to mitigate human mistakes? Have they been successful? Any other comments on the subject would be appreciated, we would like to come to our next meeting armed and dangerous. Thanks! Chad
