33-Bit Addressing via ONE bit or TWO bits ? does NANOG care? As some people (who understand IPv4) know, there is a SINGLE spare/unused bit in the IPv4 header that can be set to 0 or 1. Some religions require that it be set to 0. Adult content is marked with a 1. That single bit can be viewed as common between the Source and Destination creating a 33rd bit of addressing. Since it is a single bit, it is welded together for both Source and Destination. 0-Normal 1-Evil/Other/Adult/XXX In anticipation of expanding to 33-bit addressing, another bit was deprecated years ago. It can now be used to UNWELD the EVIL bit. That would allow EVIL to be only for the Source. The Destination would have its own EVIL bit. If two bits are used, then the potential to communicate between the previously welded address spaces arises. Some enforcement could still be used in Edge Network Elements to make sure both bits are 0 or both 1. Enforcements are hard to maintain and full 33-bit addressing may emerge. As an aside, NAT was primarily added to improve the .NET Architecture with a Flash Upgrade-able Network Element. It is a shame that IPv6 salesman do not seem to understand "Architecture". They continue on the [NAT is Evil] path. NANOG can play an important role in shaping how Address Plans for North America evolve. Since Network Elements are going to be flash upgraded for the new DNS, it is easy to (unweld/change) the 33-bit addressing for .XXX The 33-bit addressing works into the 66-bit Triple-Tagged VLAN addressing with Content Rating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.1Q The Locator is 33-bits and the ID is 33-bits. Both are UNIQUE. Both fit in the IPv4 foot-print. The three-ring circus architecture emerges. (((Core)Edge)Fringe) does NANOG care? is NANOG now Fringe ?

Skytel (now Velocita Wireless) has a fine 2-way network, which we used until early last year. We switched over to Metrotel, which had a smaller form-factor unit w/o 2-way which was better for us, for about a year. However, we have completely cut over to SMS for alert pages now. Multitech makes a nice little GSM modem that sits on a serial port on your alerting systems. I threw AT&T SIMs in them, wrote a tiny bit of glue to convert from email alerts to SMS alerts, and now we get all of our alerts using SMS. There's lots of open source code to handle the modems. It's completely out-of-band, even more so than our old touch-tone-phone-paging system was, so I'm actually happier with the total performance. Given that GSM coverage is increasing while pager coverage seems static or decreasing, SMS via out-of-band GSM looks like a great solution. DSL or T1 Service to Equinix DC5, Ashburn, VA

We've been trying to get a DSL line to our cage at Equinix DC5 in Ashburn, VA with no luck. It seems there is no DSL service in the area; that's what we've been told anyway. Anyone know differently? Alternately, any thoughts on a good provider for a T1? Replies off-list, please. v6 bgp peer costs?

I currently have a v4 BGP session with AS 701 and recently requested a v6 BGP session to which I was told a tunnel session will be provided (Same circuit would be better but whatever!). Towards the final stage in discussions I was told that it will cost $1500. I find this quite ridiculous and it will certainly not motivate people to move to v6 if providers put a direct price tag on it. I am going through a bandwidth reseller though so I am not sure who is trying to jack me here. Has anyone here gone through a similar experience? Thanks, Zaid

Hello, From our past experience this can be accomplished without issue as long as you have good log records and tracking in place. Ensure you have long-term retention for the logs to cover yourself. The truth to your question is, anybody who wants to. Hackers, activists, governments, terrorists all have the ability to control it. But probably not all at the same time. With the increase in irresponsible security disclosures by folks such as Tavis Ormandy, power and control is very much being handed to "the people".
