Hello, I'm Matthew Nance-Hall (Matt), a PhD Candidate at the University of Oregon working with Prof. Ram Durairajan (UO), Prof. Paul Barford (UW-Madison) and Prof. Klaus-Tycho Foerster (TU Dortmund). I was hoping someone could shed operator perspective on a research question we're exploring. We're interested in the timescales and mechanisms used to adjust data paths and wondering where gaps might exist between traffic engineering (TE), fast fail-over, and routing. We're specifically curious about spatio-temporal characteristics where gaps might exist. For example, the topological scope of an event (congestion or outage) and the timescale for adjustments to be made. I'm aware there are operator tools such as fast fail-over and TE for making changes confined to single links or across the whole network but wonder if there is a place for events that have broader scope (beyond a single link but less than the whole network) where new inquiry and exploration would be welcome. Whats the availability of two byte asns look like? Anyone able to obtain one recently? I have a network that is all Mikrotik and the route targets are messing with them. They can’t use communities with their 4 bytes asn. It’s one of those it really isn’t a big deal but I thought I would ask. Can anyone from Cogent hit me up off-list? Having an issue in South America getting packets to our site in Brazil. Traceroute shows route though a Cogent router, then RFC1918 replies. So not sure if problem is Cogent or a peer of theirs. Two hosts in the 177.10.168.124/30 are acting differently. Thanks, Chuck

NANOG List posts and DMARC

Can someone flip the option in Mailman for DMARC please, it’s problematic as if one posts and does DMARC and has feedback on, our messages are possibly rejected, and the feedback from a post is quite large. Not sure who manages it anymore these days. - Jared

Hi. Looking at the article on Tier 1 networks, I found one that I know for a fact that pays for some transit (12956) and some I usually don't associate to Tier 1 status, like 6762. Is there a list of such transit relationships by those bragging about being Tier 1 ? Rubens

At our residence, the US mailbox is positioned near the recycling bin. Bulk mail generally goes directly into recycling without being viewed. Sadly, receiver has to pay for recycling (via taxes). Likewise, we expect unsolicited electronic bulk mail to go directly to recycling (the spam folder is automatically deleted, recycling storage). Tool for virtual networks

Dear colleagues, I've been developing a tool for building and experimenting with virtual networks, primarily for use with teaching network protocols. It's an active work-in-progress, but I thought it might be time to reach out to NANOG in case anyone else might find it useful and/or might have feedback to offer. Here is the code: https://github.com/cdeccio/cougarnet It includes layer-2 switches, VLANs and trunking, and routers, all using Linux processes in their own namespaces as network "nodes". It was inspired by mininet (https://mininet.org) but it was developed from scratch to meet different needs. The README has additional information. If you install and run the code, *please* do it in a *virtual machine*. At this point, it requires superuser capabilities to run things like "ip link", "ip addr", and "sysctl", among other things, using sudo. Much on the to-do list, but it meets my immediate needs.
