Question about FibroLAN Falcon-x

Hello All! Just a quick question. Anybody here had experience with Falcon-X of Fibrolan? How do you rate itas a MetroE ringswitch? They have a very competitive price and we are now considering using them. P.S. Several 2.5* / 3* hotel managers I spoke with volunteered, implied or confirmed that they're paying on the order of 2k$/mo for "internet" in Northern California. And at least in the US, I'm yet to encounter a complementary WiFi at any hotel that would be doing JavaScript insertion, so I'm not sure where you get your information that the free internet always means ads or a very high level of tampering. One of my prior residential ISPs, Embarq, arguably did more tampering and data mining with my connection than any of the hotels I have ever stayed at. (I'm talking about DNS hijacking.) Now. Notice that these hotels are already paying 2k$/mo and getting 10Mbps, which residentially retails at 40$/mo. How much will 100Mbps cost them? What, still 2k/mo? What are they waiting for? Or, pardon my residential bias, but are some of them still using T1's? Don't those cost a fortune? Wouldn't they actually save their money by going elsewhere? I hear microwave links are pretty popular these days, and offer great bandwidth and latency. looking for terminology recommendations concerning non-rooted FQDNs

I'm trying to nail down some terminology for doc purposes. The issue: most resources on the net freely describe a fully-qualified domian name ('FQDN') as to exclude the root domain; i.e, they exclude the trailing dot as mandated by some RFCs such as RFC 1535: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1535.txt An absolute "rooted" FQDN is of the format {name}{.} A non "rooted" domain name is of the format {name} I'm trying to come up with some human-facing terminology that names these two forms: "a.b.c." "a.b.c" Many resources on the net use the term 'rooted domain name' for the former, but they're collectively ambigious about what the other form should be called. Does anyone here have any solid advice, or can point me to a resource that would call out useful conventions? All, I have been searching our beloved internet endlessly for months on information regarding Visio technique. Does anyone have a good resource(s) for advanced visio drawings, or more to the point a good place for high quality connectors? There is some great quality work out there, this is something I found just a little while ago http://www.parallels.com/r/upload/figure2-1.gif This may not be a visio drawing (do not have any background on it), but I would really dig some resources that you guys out there may or may not use. The cables in that drawing look fantastic to me, so I would really appreciate any guidance you all have in helping me improve my output. Thanks! //warren

Demarc in FTTH ?

What are you thoughts about whether FTTH GPON systems have a demarc or not ? Would it be the ONT ? (since beyond the ONT, the end user has no ability to test the line). or should FTTH be viewed more like DOCSIS systems where there is no official demarc ? In Canada, the telcos charge a "DMC" charge if they visit an end user's house and find the service is fine at the demarc (indicating problem in within customer's responsability). So finding out where responsanility ends would be userful. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, since the ONT is generally proprietary to the telco who made decisions on GPON deployments, does it make sense to have the ONT in the customer's responsability ?

SDN - Killer Apps

Hi, I am trying to understand how SDNs can dramatically change the networking paradigm and this is my understanding. Yahoo, Google, etc applications are running on one server and each application could be theoretically associated with a unique VXLAN tag. This way service providers will be able to provide QoS per application (by effectively providing QoS to the VXLAN carried in the pkts). So now Youtube for example, can get unique QoS treatment from our desktops to the edge of the network. Form there on core routing will pick up - which remains largely unaffected by VXLANs. OpenFlow is useful because it provides a common "CLI/SNMP" with which all routers from all vendors can be provisioned and monitored. As an example, VPLS configuration in Juniper, CIsco and AlaLu routers will be very different. So, provisioning a VPLS service in a network that comprises of these 3 vendors would require the admins to know the CLIs of all these routers. If these routers support OpenFlow, then theoretically, one configuration would work on all routers. OpenFlow would like say "Provision a LSP" and each router will internally provision an LSP. The admin remains oblivious to the internal CLIs of these boxes. The SDN controller is a SW that can again theoretically be made aware of the entire network. It can look at SNMP traps, etc and can figure out the exact topology of the network. Based on the SNMP traps, messages it can determine all failures in the network. It can run routing protocol simulations and figure out the best topology in the network. This can, using OpenFlow, be programmed on all routers. So, all heavy CPU processing task is taken over by the SDN controller. The controller can also take in requests on what network aware applications require and feed that to the routers/switches in the network and thus you have an application aware network provisioned. I understand that this is just some bit of what we can do with SDN. The amount of what all can be done is limitless. So, a question to all out there - Is my understanding of what can be achieved with SDN, is correct? Glen

Circuit Bandwidth Simulator applet etc

I would like a applet or program I can feed it nodes and a network topology, then just set hypothetical transmit speeds at child nodes then have the applet or program display the Parent node bandwidth. Is there any Visio applets or macros out there I wonder? Sorry another tool question but I don't want to start coding something up if I don't have to. I use NetDot but I don't think it has any circuit bandwidth tools like that. I have used GNS3 in the past but that is way more complex for this need I have. -- Thanks, Joe
