subrate SFP?

How do people deal with situation where you need <=48 SFP/SFP+ ports, but you occasionally need one or two cu 10/100 ports? For some reason it's becoming quite rare for SFP port to natively support 10M and 100M rates. Technically obviously solution to me would be subrate SFP, which presents itself as 1GE to host, offering 100M or 10M to client. This would obviously break QoS at the host as host would still think it's 1GE and SFP itself would need to drop+buffer. But for my applications it would be fine, the 10M or 100M ports are typical some MGMT access interfaces. I can't imagine such SFP being complex or expensive, considering we have E1 over IP in a SFP, which includes control-plane and forwarding-plane inside SFP form-factor Is this demand peculiar? Could I source such SFP somewhere by showing there is demand? Putting 2 port switches or fibre converters with external PSU just to support few ports seem dirty. -- ++ytti

Parsing Syslog and Acting on it, using other input too

Hello. I am looking for a way to do proactive monitoring of my network, what I am specifically thinking about is receiving syslog msgs from the routers and the backend engine would correlate certain msgs with output/data that i am receiving through SSH/telnet sessions. What i am after is not exposed to SNMP so i need to do it on my own. I am sure there are many tools that can do parsing of syslog and acting upon it but i wonder if there is something more flexible out there that I can just re-use to do the above ? Please point me to known public or home-grown scripts in use to achieve this. Regards, Sam

Evaluating Tier 1 Internet providers

Based on various conversation threads on Nanog I've come up with a few criteria for evaluating Tier 1 providers. I'm open to add other criteria - what would you add to this list? And how would I get a quantitative or qualitative measure of it? routing stability BGP community offerings congestion issues BGP Peering relationships path diversity IPv6 table size Seems like everyone offers 5 9's service, 45 ms coast-to-coast, 24x7 customer support, 100/1Gbps/10Gbps with various DIR/CIR and burst rates. I'm shopping for new service and want to do better than choosing on reputation. (or, is reputation also a criteria?) much appreciated, Eric Louie
