New addresses for b.root-servers.net

USC/ISI is renumbering both its IPv4 and IPv6 addresses for b.root-servers.net on 2023-11-27. Our new IPv4 address will be 170.247.170.2 and our new IPv6 address will be 2801:1b8:10::b. USC/ISI will continue to support root service over our current IPv4 and IPv6 addresses for at least one year (until 2024-11-27) in order to provide a stable transition period while new root hints files are distributed in software and operating system packages. We are renumbering to increase the resilience of the Root Servers System by further diversifying the number of Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) that have allocated IP addresses to Root Server Operators. Our addresses will be the first in the Root Server System to have been allocated by LACNIC and our routes will be verifiable through LACNIC’s Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) Trust Anchor Location (TAL). We thank LACNIC for helping make this renumbering possible, and ARIN for supporting our prior addressing assignments. FCC Chair Rosenworcel Proposes to Investigate Impact of Data Caps

While a lot of ISPs gave up on data caps, the language is still lurking in many Terms Of Service. https://www.fcc.gov/document/chair-rosenworcel-proposes-investigate-impact-… proposed Notice of Inquiry to learn more about how broadband providers use data caps on consumer plans. Data caps, or usage limits, are a common practice where an internet service provider (ISP) restricts how much bandwidth or data a consumer uses, though many broadband ISPs temporarily or permanently refrained from enforcing or imposing data caps in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the agency would like to better understand the current state of data caps, their impact on consumers, and whether the Commission should consider taking action to ensure that data caps do not cause harm to competition or consumers’ ability to access broadband Internet services.

It often makes sense for them to speak to their Transport vendor, as their gear is already an installed base. Two or so years later, those operators will be ripping those Transport boxes out and replacing them with more traditional packet switching gear, as you did as well. Transport vendors continue to push their boxes as being MPLS-capable routers. It tends to be a "tick the box that we had that conversation this new year, make it last at least 3 seconds, and then carry on with real talk" situation :-). Mark.

10G CPE w/VXLAN - vendors?

Hello, all. I’m having difficulty finding vendors, never mind products, that fit my need. We have a small but growing number of L2 (bridged) customers that have diverse fiber paths available, and, naturally, want to make use of them. We have a solution for this: we extend the edge of our EVPN VXLAN fabric right to the customer premise. The customer-prem device needs 4x10G SFP+ cages (2 redundant paths, plus LAG to customer), and the switches we currently use, Arista 7020Rs, are quite expensive if I’m deploying one one per customer. (Nice switches, but overkill here – I don’t need 40/100G, and I don’t need 24 SFP+ ports. And they still take forever to ship.) We use RFC7438 §6.3 “vlan-aware-bundle” mode, not §6.1 “vlan-based” mode, which limits our choices somewhat. I might be willing to entertain spinning up a separate VXLAN mesh using RFC7438 §6.1 (“vlan-based”) and static VTEPs if it saves me a lot of pain. However, I’m having trouble finding small & cheaper 1U (or even desktop/wallmount) devices that have 4 SFP+ cages, and can do VXLAN, in the first place. Who even makes CPE gear with SFP+ ports? (Other than Mikrotik CRS309-1G-8S+IN / CRS317-1G-16S+RM, which are nice, but our policy requires vendor support contracts, so… no-go.) Vendors? Model#s, if you happen to know any?
