Issue with Geolocation in Virginia US

Team, We are having issues in our Virginia US office & it shows geolocation in all browsers as Canada instead of US region when we access news.google.com in our PC. Our public ip is 129.46.232.65. Outside plant - prewire customer demarc preference

Of course, every local carrier will be different, what are the current preferences for pre-wiring a customer demarc (NID, the box that hangs on the outside of the house, whatever the service provider calls it now)? 1. Nothing - telco/cable will do whatever the heck they want and wreck the outside of the house anyway 2. Smurf tube from demarc to central distribution point with an interior power outlet near the demarc 3. ANSI TIA-570 prewire (2 x CAT 6, 2 x RG 6) from demarc to central distribution point (low-voltage contractors don't use UV-rated cable for the demarc, and the jacket is trash in a few years) In the past, I found if I made the pre-wire look nice and easy for the field technician, they usually made the extra effort to keep their work clean and tidy.

The rise and fall of the 90's telecom bubble

Aside from me pinning the start of the bubble closer to 1992 when commercial activity was allowed, and M&A for ISPs at insane valuations per subscriber by 1995 (I had co-founded an ISP in 93, but try as I might I cannot remember if it peaked at 50 or 60x1 by 1996 (?) and crashed by 97 (?)), this was a whacking good read, seems accurate, and moves to comparing it across that to the present day AI bubble. https://www.fabricatedknowledge.com/p/lessons-from-history-the-rise-and In the end we sold (my ISP, founded 93) icanect for 3 cents on the dollar in 99, and I lost my shirt (not for the first time) on it, only to move into embedded Linux (Montavista) after the enormous pop redhat's IPO had had in 99. The company I was part of slightly prior (Mediaplex) went public December 12, 1999 and cracked 100/share, only to crash by march, 2000 to half the IPO price (around $7 as I recall), wiping out everyone that had not vested yet. I lost my shirt again on that and Montavista too and decided I would avoid VCs henceforth. I am always interested in anecdotal reports of personal events in this increasingly murky past, and in trying to fact check the above link. So much fiber got laid by 2000 that it is often claimed that it was at least a decade before it was used up, (the article says only 2.7% was in use by 2002) and I have always wondered how much dark, broken, inaccessible fiber remains that nobody knows where it even is anymore due to many lost databases. I hear horror stories... The article also focuses solely on the us sector, and I am wondering what it looked like worldwide. I believed in the 90s we were seeing major productivity gains. The present expansion of the internet in my mind should not be much associated with "productivity gains", as, imho, reducing the general population to two thumbs and a 4 inch screen strikes me as an enormous step backwards. (I have a bad habit of cross posting my mails to where older denizens of the internet reside, sorry! Fiber/OSP Technician Training and Apprenticeship Programs

Hey all, I've recently been working with our county's broadband task force, investigating the expansion and equity of broadband networks on a local and state level. Through that, it's become clear that there's a painful shortage of fiber / outside plant technicians in the state of Michigan (if not nation-wide) in order to fulfill the workforce requirements of maintaining the current broadband fiber infrastructure in the state, much less to fuel fiber expansion, and especially in rural areas. There appear to be few options for training the required workforce, especially outside of the large enterprises that have the resources to run their own internal programs, and small (or even mid-sized) ISPs seem to be left with predominantly informal person-to-person transfer of internal knowledge, assuming that they have the required internal knowledge in the first place. This need for a qualified workforce is exacerbated in the face of the multitude of state and federal programs to encourage broadband internet expansion and equity, such as the upcoming $42.5 billion in BEAD grant funding and corresponding construction starting in ~12-18 months state- and nation-wide. As a result, our workforce development team over here at Mott Community College (Genesee County, MI) is working to develop a fiber / outside plant training and apprenticeship program in order to help address this shortage of qualified personnel and training options at a local and state level. We're looking for some industry contacts that would be interested in collaborating with us to establish high-level requirements regarding what skills need to be taught to prospective fiber / outside plant technicians, what qualifications trainees should have after completion in order to fulfill current workforce demands, and to otherwise provide input in sketching out a high-level curriculum. We're looking for feedback from a wide cross-section of industry stakeholders -- large enterprise backbone transit providers, rural residential ISPs, fiber co-ops and municipal networks, operations and outside plant managers, etc. -- in order to determine what the industry wants and needs, and how the entire community college system can help meet those needs. If anyone thinks that they have valuable input to provide regarding these workforce requirements, or knows the right people to talk to, please reach out and let me know! COM zone operational announcement: DNSSEC algorithm rollover

Verisign will soon begin the transition to DNSSEC algorithm 13 (ECDSA) for the COM zone. Over the next few days, algorithm 13 signatures will start to appear in the zone, followed by the algorithm 13 DNSKEY records. We expect the DS record for the COM zone to change from algorithm 8 to algorithm 13 on or around December 7. CPE/NID options

I'm evaluating CPEs for one of my clients, a regional ISP. Currently, we're terminating the customer's service (L3) on our upstream equipment and extending it over our own fiber to the customer's premise, where it lands in a Juniper EX2200 or EX2300. At a previous job, I used Accedian's ANTs on the customer prem side. I like the ANT because it has a small footprint with only 2 ports, it's passively cooled, it's very simple to operate, it's controlled centrally, etc. Unfortunately, when I reached out to Accedian, they insisted that the controller (which is required) started at $30k, which is a non-starter for us. I'm not aware of any other products like this. Does anyone have a recommendation for a simple L2* device to deploy to customer premises? Not necessarily the exact same thing, but something similarly-featured would be ideal. *I'm not sure if the ANT is exactly "layer 2", but I don't know what else to call it.

ACX7100 Woes - Operator Outreach -

In attempting to operationalize the ACX7100 I have run into quite a few challenges with the platform once I stray outside of traditional routing and switching. The EVPN instances seem to have quite a few caveats and things like CFM and RFC2544 traffic generation. Many of the show commands don't seem to work, many of the counters either don't work or update slowly (like I run the command to show CFM messages and it says it sent 100 then I run it again a couple seconds later and it says 10000 sent then a couple seconds later it says 1000000 sent) this with a periodicity of 1 message per second. Oh and the latest is that our original OEM QSFPs just disappear. As in they not only stop working but the chassis no longer sees them. I guess I'm just reaching out to see if I'm all alone in my struggles... Warm Regards and happy Monday after Thanksgiving, Ed

Generally accepted BGP acceptance criteria?

In the world of IRR and RPKI, BGP route acceptance criteria is important to get right. DE-CIX has published a detailed flow chart documenting their acceptance criteria: https://www.de-cix.net/en/locations/frankfurt/route-server-guide But I don’t see a lot of operators publishing their criteria. I imagine there is a some sort of coalescing industry standard out there, but so far I can’t find it. Of the upstreams I use, just one publishes a flowchart. Another is basically refusing to explain anything other than they “use” IRR and RPKI, ad that RPKI is “good”. I assumed that everyone implementing RPKI validation, would skip IRR route object validation if the route is RPKI-valid. I assumed that everyone is doing this now, or would do this when they implement RPKI validation. But I spoke to an operator today, which still expects all routes to pass IRR as well (and while they perform RPKI-validation, they effectively do nothing with the result). To me, this seems like a different direction than most operators are going. Or is it? The most surprising thing in the DE-DIX flow chart, was that they check that the origin AS exists in the IRR as-set, before doing RPKI, and if the set existence fails, they reject the route. I don’t see a problem with this, as maintaining as-sets is easy, but it does prevent an eventual 100% RPKI future with no IRR at all. I also thought there may be an informational RFC on this, but I couldn’t find anything. Has there been anything published or any presentations given, on generally accepted BGP route acceptance criteria? Tom
