To my surprise, I did not see a mention in this community of the latest proof of the complete failure of the SSL CA model to actually do what it is supposed to: provide security, rather than a false sense of security. Essentially a state somewhere between Iraq and Pakistan snatched valid certs for: - mail.google.com - www.google.com - login.yahoo.com - login.skype.com - addons.mozilla.org - login.live.com - "global trustee" https://blog.torproject.org/blog/detecting-certificate-authority-compromise… http://www.comodo.com/Comodo-Fraud-Incident-2011-03-23.html http://www.imperialviolet.org/2011/03/18/revocation.html (on epic failure of cert revocation lists implementations in browsers, failing open (!)) http://blog.mozilla.com/security/2011/03/22/firefox-blocking-fraudulent-cer… http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/2524375.mspx For over a week users of browsers, and the internet at large, were/was not informed by COMODO that their security was compromised. "Why not" is beyond many of us. Announcing this high and loud even before fixes were available would not have exposed more users to threats, but less. Conclusion: protecting people must not be a priority in the SSL CA model. In some places, failure of internet security means people die, and it is high time to start serious work to replace this time-and-time again proven flawed model with something that, at the very least, does not fail this tragically. DNSSEC is a good but insufficient start in this particular case. Regards, Martin

Ransom DDoS attack - need help!

All, I've been a NANOG member for many years but I'm emailing from an anonymous account to reduce the chance of the attackers finding me. A company that shall remain anonymous has received a ransom DDoS note from a very well known group that has been in the news lately. Recently they've threatened to carry out a major DDoS attack if they are not paid by a deadline which is approaching. They've performed an attack of a smaller magnitude to prove that they're serious. Based on certain details that I can't reveal here, we believe the magnitude of the upcoming attack may be in the several hundred Gbps. I would really appreciate help in a few areas (primarily with certain provider contacts/intros) so we can execute our strategy (which I can't reveal here for obvious reasons). If you email me off-list with a name/email that you've previously used on-list, I will reply from my real email. Alternatively, if you can post your experiences on-list with large scale high profile ransom DDoS attacks, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

The cost of this software engineering should be minimal. The EzIP deployment architecture is the same as that of the existing CG-NAT (Carrier Grade Network Address Translation). Consequently, there is no need to modify any hardware equipment. There is an online setup description (Reference II), called RAN (Regional Area Network), that demonstrates the feasibility of this approach. 2) There are additional consequential benefits by deploying EzIP, such as those mentioned by our comment to Reference III in the above whitepaper. Quite timely too, as home connectivity is needed more than ever. Highlights: - location: just outside of Ann Arbor - no fixed broadband since 2002 -> build own network - pre-wire neighbors with fiber drops and feed them off WISP first - lots of work to sign up customers, having to resort to snailmail to reach all - 70% of homes passed signed up - Have ASN, get IPv6 and IPv4 allocation, multihome and connect to local IXP - purchase equipment: fusion splicer, OTDR, materials, directional drill(!) - hire contractors, deal with all manner of problems, theft, stop work orders, unbudgeted costs, unmarked/badly marked utilities, hitting (own) utilities - build own fiber blower(!) for blowing in fiber in ducts - splice, OTDR, resplice, schedule installs ... which don't always go to plan - Upstream very helpful, offered a Cisco 6500 as CPE, however respectfuly declined and went with Arista - Link up! Network is now live with 17 subscribers hooked up. More waiting to be connected - Mixed Active Ethernet and GPON - latency drops from 30 ms to 8 ms, bandwidth from 20-30M to 730M, total commit 1.5G on 10G port, plans from 50M to 500M - SPAM! IPv4 brokers and the usual unsolicited contacts from bottom of the baller IP transit providers - Costs: $126k in 2020, $95k contractors, $32k materials and equipment. Total outlay ~$150k + years of sweat equity. Important to spread out costs over longer period of time to be able to afford. Offset costs by using pre-pay model (Can pay $5,000 up-front and receive $50 credit for 100 months) All in all it was an excellent presentation. I only wish Jared had spent some more time on how he had to become a telco and how this got him better access to the public right of way. Of course, some more details on his directional boring and some nice video of him running the drill would have been a cherry on top :) I'd like to congratulate Jared on lighting up his network and wish him success in running it. I did a similar build almost twenty years ago and regret I didn't have the forethought to document the effort better then. Any sign of supply chain returning to normal?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this discussion but I can't think of anywhere better to ask. Has anyone seen any progress whatsoever on supply chain issues with networking hardware? I've noticed that primary market lead times have been increasing and at the same time secondary market pricing has also been going higher at the same time, still. What have you seen?

Dear all Following advice from thus list, I updated the YADA I-Draft (latest is https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-thubert-v6ops-yada-yatt-03.html, more to come soon if feedback is heard) and proposed it to the v6ops WG at the IETF. For memory, the main goal here is to find a compromise as opposed to yet another transition solution, though it can be used as a side effect to move along the ladder. The compromise does not change IPv4 or IPv6, tries not to take side for one or the other, and add features to both sides which, if implemented, reduce the chasm that leads to dual stack and CG-NATs. There's value for the movers, lots more public address space for the IPv4-only stack/networks and free prefixes per node and new deployment opportunities for the IPv6-only ones. One major update from the original text accounts for Dave's comment in this list on BCP 38 enforcement, I believe it's solved now. I also added format layouts to Abe Chen's question, and text on the naïve version vs. all the elasticity that exists there and in IP in general to allow real world deployments.
