Long hops on international paths

Hello, I am a researcher at the University of Wisconsin. My colleagues at Northwestern University and I are studying international Internet connectivity and would appreciate your perspective on a recent finding. We're using traceroute data from CAIDA's Ark project for our work. We've observed that many international links (i.e., a single hop on an end-to-end path that connects two countries where end points on the hop are identified via rDNS) tend to originate/terminate at the same routers. Said another way, we are observing a relatively small set of routers in different countries tend to have a majority of the international connections - this is especially the case for hops that terminate in the US. For example, there is a router operated by Telia (AS1299) in Chicago that has a high concentration of such links. We were a bit surprised by this finding since even though it makes sense that the set of providers is relatively small (i.e., those that offer global connectivity), we assumed that the set of routers that used for international connectivity within any one country would tend to be more widely distributed (at least with respect to how they appear in traceroute data - MPLS notwithstanding). We're interested in whether or not this is indeed standard practice and if so, the cost/benefit for configuring international connectivity in this way? Operator survey: Incrementally deployable secure Internet routing

Dear Nanog, We appreciate that your time is very precious, but we wanted to ask you for your help in answering a brief survey about a new secure routing system we have developed in a research collaboration between ETH, Princeton University, and University of Virginia. SBAS provides substantial routing security improvements when retrofitted to the current Internet. It also provides benefits even to non-participating networks and endpoints when communicating with an SBAS-protected entity. We currently have a functional prototype of this network using SCIONLab (for the secure backbone) and the PEERING testbed (to make outbound BGP announcements). Our ultimate aim is to develop and deploy SBAS beyond an experimental scope, and the input of network operators that would actually have to run these PoPs would greatly benefit this project and help make secure routing a reality. It’s the frequency and the knowledge to configure the software and equipment that is still prohibitively expensive in many cases. And frankly, if you are only providing fixed access to 500 users, I’m not sure even the AWS solution is necessary. Because if you can configure the transport and the software you can probably run a handful of KVM servers. Geoff, My understanding is that the FAA and 5G industry has just this week agreed on buffer zones around 50 of the impacted 80 US airports: https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/las-vegas-airport-included-in-5g-b… The 30 airports that are not buffered I think don’t have 5G deployed yet. For example, Denver international. The buffer zone is described as “the last 20 seconds of flight time”, which considering 230MPH (the airspeed limit in Class C airspace) as a worst case scenario, would be about a mile and a half. I fly helicopters, and for helicopter EMS flying, radar altimeters are important on the RTB (return to base) leg. So unless the FAA can get buffer zones around all the hospital helipads, I think there’s still an issue.
