Team, We are having issues in our Virginia US office & it shows geolocation in all browsers as Canada instead of US region when we access news.google.com in our PC. Our public ip is 129.46.232.65. Quite timely too, as home connectivity is needed more than ever. Highlights: - location: just outside of Ann Arbor - no fixed broadband since 2002 -> build own network - pre-wire neighbors with fiber drops and feed them off WISP first - lots of work to sign up customers, having to resort to snailmail to reach all - 70% of homes passed signed up - Have ASN, get IPv6 and IPv4 allocation, multihome and connect to local IXP - purchase equipment: fusion splicer, OTDR, materials, directional drill(!) - hire contractors, deal with all manner of problems, theft, stop work orders, unbudgeted costs, unmarked/badly marked utilities, hitting (own) utilities - build own fiber blower(!) for blowing in fiber in ducts - splice, OTDR, resplice, schedule installs ... which don't always go to plan - Upstream very helpful, offered a Cisco 6500 as CPE, however respectfuly declined and went with Arista - Link up! Network is now live with 17 subscribers hooked up. More waiting to be connected - Mixed Active Ethernet and GPON - latency drops from 30 ms to 8 ms, bandwidth from 20-30M to 730M, total commit 1.5G on 10G port, plans from 50M to 500M - SPAM! IPv4 brokers and the usual unsolicited contacts from bottom of the baller IP transit providers - Costs: $126k in 2020, $95k contractors, $32k materials and equipment. Total outlay ~$150k + years of sweat equity. Important to spread out costs over longer period of time to be able to afford. Offset costs by using pre-pay model (Can pay $5,000 up-front and receive $50 credit for 100 months) All in all it was an excellent presentation. I only wish Jared had spent some more time on how he had to become a telco and how this got him better access to the public right of way. Of course, some more details on his directional boring and some nice video of him running the drill would have been a cherry on top :) I'd like to congratulate Jared on lighting up his network and wish him success in running it. I did a similar build almost twenty years ago and regret I didn't have the forethought to document the effort better then. New minimum speed for US broadband connections

What should be the new minimum speed for "broadband" in the U.S.? This is the list of past minimum broadband speed definitions by year year speed 1999 200 kbps in both directions (this was chosen as faster than dialup/ISDN speeds) 2000 200 kbps in at least one direction (changed because too many service providers had 128 kbps upload) 2010 4 mbps down / 1 mbps up 2015 25 Mbps down / 3 Mbps up (wired) 5 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up (wireless) 2021 ??? / ??? (some Senators propose 100/100 mbps) Not only in major cities, but also rural areas Note, the official broadband definition only means service providers can't advertise it as "broadband" or qualify for subsidies; not that they must deliver better service.

PeeringDB Hackathon - looking for feature requests

PeeringDB is looking at participating at an upcoming NANOG Hackathon. One of the ideas for a theme is to improve the API. Specifically by adding API calls for common use cases that people need to handle outside of the API. Typically, by dumping the entire database to SQL For example - given two IXes, which networks are present at both? We'd like to make a list of such useful queries such that people don't have to dump the database just to run them. A stretch goal would be to expose into the website instead of requiring API calls. This issue has some more detail, including a few existing ideas: https://github.com/peeringdb/peeringdb/issues/1020 Comments there or in email to me would be super helpful. Famous operational issues

Friends, I'd like to start a thread about the most famous and widespread Internet operational issues, outages or implementation incompatibilities you have seen. Which examples would make up your top three? To get things started, I'd suggest the AS 7007 event is perhaps the most notorious and likely to top many lists including mine. So if that is one for you I'm asking for just two more. I'm particularly interested in this as the first step in developing a future NANOG session. I'd be particularly interested in any issues that also identify key individuals that might still be around and interested in participating in a retrospective. I already have someone that is willing to talk about AS 7007, which shouldn't be hard to guess who. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, John

Reminder: Never connect a generator to home wiring without transfer switch

Currently a problem in the north-east USA, but applicable after every storm. People in the south have more experience with hurricanes, and are used to this advice. But apparently, some folks up north aren't in practice. Never connect an electric generator to home electrical wiring without installing a transfer switch to disconnect power from the electric grid. Back feeding electric power into the utility lines is dangerous for the repair crews working on utility lines. Also, never run a generator indoors or in the garage. Only outdoors 20-feet away from doors and windows. FCC has activated DIRS reporting for tropical storm Henri. So we should see some communication system disaster reporting this afternoon.

701 contact that actually responds...

Hi guys, we (1280) have a prefix missing from 701's routing tables that harms us quite a bit. I've tried contacting the obvious email addresses with details, but got zero response (I've checked the spamtrap) inside 24 hours. Is there a better way to contact the actual NOC than CaryNMC-IP(a)verizon.com ? Thanks for any help, Elmar.
