Quite timely too, as home connectivity is needed more than ever. Highlights: - location: just outside of Ann Arbor - no fixed broadband since 2002 -> build own network - pre-wire neighbors with fiber drops and feed them off WISP first - lots of work to sign up customers, having to resort to snailmail to reach all - 70% of homes passed signed up - Have ASN, get IPv6 and IPv4 allocation, multihome and connect to local IXP - purchase equipment: fusion splicer, OTDR, materials, directional drill(!) - hire contractors, deal with all manner of problems, theft, stop work orders, unbudgeted costs, unmarked/badly marked utilities, hitting (own) utilities - build own fiber blower(!) for blowing in fiber in ducts - splice, OTDR, resplice, schedule installs ... which don't always go to plan - Upstream very helpful, offered a Cisco 6500 as CPE, however respectfuly declined and went with Arista - Link up! Network is now live with 17 subscribers hooked up. More waiting to be connected - Mixed Active Ethernet and GPON - latency drops from 30 ms to 8 ms, bandwidth from 20-30M to 730M, total commit 1.5G on 10G port, plans from 50M to 500M - SPAM! IPv4 brokers and the usual unsolicited contacts from bottom of the baller IP transit providers - Costs: $126k in 2020, $95k contractors, $32k materials and equipment. Total outlay ~$150k + years of sweat equity. Important to spread out costs over longer period of time to be able to afford. Offset costs by using pre-pay model (Can pay $5,000 up-front and receive $50 credit for 100 months) All in all it was an excellent presentation. I only wish Jared had spent some more time on how he had to become a telco and how this got him better access to the public right of way. Of course, some more details on his directional boring and some nice video of him running the drill would have been a cherry on top :) I'd like to congratulate Jared on lighting up his network and wish him success in running it. I did a similar build almost twenty years ago and regret I didn't have the forethought to document the effort better then. What should be the new minimum speed for "broadband" in the U.S.? This is the list of past minimum broadband speed definitions by year year speed 1999 200 kbps in both directions (this was chosen as faster than dialup/ISDN speeds) 2000 200 kbps in at least one direction (changed because too many service providers had 128 kbps upload) 2010 4 mbps down / 1 mbps up 2015 25 Mbps down / 3 Mbps up (wired) 5 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up (wireless) 2021 ??? / ??? (some Senators propose 100/100 mbps) Not only in major cities, but also rural areas Note, the official broadband definition only means service providers can't advertise it as "broadband" or qualify for subsidies; not that they must deliver better service.

Friends, I'd like to start a thread about the most famous and widespread Internet operational issues, outages or implementation incompatibilities you have seen. Which examples would make up your top three? To get things started, I'd suggest the AS 7007 event is perhaps the most notorious and likely to top many lists including mine. So if that is one for you I'm asking for just two more. I'm particularly interested in this as the first step in developing a future NANOG session. I'd be particularly interested in any issues that also identify key individuals that might still be around and interested in participating in a retrospective. I already have someone that is willing to talk about AS 7007, which shouldn't be hard to guess who. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, John

A crazy idea

First, I know this isn't the right place to propose this; need a pointer to where to propose an outlandish idea. PROBLEM: IPv6 support is still in its birthing pangs. I see a problem that limits deployment of IPv6 fully: reverse PTR records in the ".in6.arpa." zones. (Now that I think about it, this may very well be a network operator issue. Who maintains the ".in.arpa." zones delegated by IANA now?) I've been going 'round and 'round with AT&T about "static" IPv6 addresses. In particular, I can't get a PTR record in the ip6.arpa. zone to save my life. Now, the problem is not really ripe yet, because the big reason for PTR records is for mail servers -- best practice calls for AAAA/PTR agreement, just like for IPv4 the best practice is for A/PTR agreement. The existing DNS providers can support delegation domains, so that I don't have to have DNS servers of my own if I don't want to. It could be that one would need to "buy" the delegation domain, but that's a front-office consideration. Personally, I use register.com for my domain DNS zones. I believe strongly that other registrars that offer customer zone editing, plus DNS service providers, can support reverse delegation zones with a minimum of hassle, and without charging an arm and a leg for the service. From the customers' viewpoint, a GUI would make the maintenance relatively painless. (Keying the information below took a long time. Any rational DNS admin and DNS service provider would have automation in place to take out the painful work.) What would the domain names look like? Let's take my current IP/IPv6 assignments from AT&T: 2600:1700:79b0:ddc0::/64 99.65.194.96/29 The IPv6 delegation would be easy: > 0.c.d.d.0.b.9.7.0.0.7.1.0.0.6.2.ip6.arpa. (Unsure if this is the right forum to ask this question, but here goes:) >From what I understand, IP Anycast can be used to steer traffic into a server that's close to the client. I am curious if anyone here has/encountered a setup where they use anycast IP on their gateways... to have a predictable egress IP for their traffic, regardless of where they are located? For example, a search engine crawler could in principle have the same IP advertised all over the world, but it looks like they don't... I wonder why? -- Vimal
