IPv4 Mismanagement

I'm sitting here in the office on a Friday performing some IP maintenance and I see that one of our upstreams is still filtering an IP range we haven't used in years. I dig into it a bit more and it turns out a major carrier still has them SWIPed to us. This got me curious and I dug more into IPs from back in our early days and discovered there are two Tier-1 carriers we no longer do business with that still have large blocks of their own IPs SWIPED and allocated to us. This is really confusing and concerning. I know it's not the end-all-be-all, but I wonder how much IPv4 exhaustion is being caused by this type of IPv4 mis-management, where IPs are still shown as "allocated" to a customer who hasn't used them in years. I've seen this behavior from Frontier and CenturyLink to name just a few. Any thoughts on this?

Pennsylvania’s voter services data center outage - 24+ hours

State and local government services are always underfunded. Election depend on heroic election administrators and a lot of duct tape. Its not yet election day, but don't be surprised by all sorts of normal problems and outages on November 3 and after when systems will be under maximum stress. Its not nefarious, just duct tape. There are backup processes, but are less effecient and slower. Pennsylvania's data center supporting several state government services, including elections, has been out of service for over 24 hours. The data center has a uptime reliability of about 94% (and dropping). “While the exact cause is not yet known, there’s no evidence present at this time to suggest any malicious activity,” she said Wednesday. “We will continue, of course, to keep investigating.” https://www.inquirer.com/politics/election/pennsylvania-voter-services-webs…

BGP Community - AS0 is de-facto "no-export-to" marker - Any ASN reserved to "export-only-to"?'

Most of us have already used some BGP community policy to no-export some routes to some where. On the majority of IXPs, and most of the Transit Providers, the very common community tell to route-servers and routers "Please do no-export these routes to that ASN" is: -> 0:<TargetASN> So we could say that this is a de-facto standard. But the Policy equivalent to "Please, export these routes only to that ASN" is very varied on all the IXPs or Transit Providers. With that said, now comes some questions: 1 - Beyond being a de-facto standard, there is any RFC, Public Policy, or something like that, that would define 0:<TargetASN> as "no-export-to" standard? 2 - What about reserving some 16-bits ASN to use <ExpOnlyTo>:<TargetASN> as "export-only-to" standard? 2.1 - Is important to be 16 bits, because with (RT) extended communities, any ASN on the planet could be the target of that policy. 2.2 - Would be interesting some mnemonic number like 1000 / 10000 or so. -- Douglas Fernando Fischer Engº de Controle e Automação

Consolidation of Email Platforms Bad for Email?

I originally asked on mailops, but here is a much wider net and I suspect there's a lot of overlap in interest. I had read an article one time, somewhere about the ongoing consolidation of e-mail into a handful of providers was bad for the Internet as a whole. It was some time ago and thus, the details have escaped me, so I was looking to refresh my recollection. Have any of you read a similar article before? Sorry if this is slightly off-topic, but I am writing some code for a custom GeoDNS routemap. My starting data set is a raw list of /24 subnets, no prefix aggregation has been done. In other words, its the entire BGP routing table in /24 prefixes - tagged by Geo region. Each region is its own txt file with a dump of /24’s. As a result, these lists are HUGE. I want to aggregate the prefixes as much as possible to create a smaller routemap. So right now it looks like: ... 105.170.72.0/24 brs 105.170.73.0/24 brs 105.170.74.0/24 brs 105.170.75.0/24 brs 105.170.76.0/24 brs 105.170.77.0/24 brs 105.170.78.0/24 brs 105.170.79.0/24 brs 105.170.80.0/24 brs 105.170.81.0/24 brs 105.170.82.0/24 brs 105.170.83.0/24 brs 105.170.84.0/24 brs … and so on. Obviously, 105.170.72.0/24 thru 105.170.79.0/24 can be aggregated to 105.170.72.0/21 and so on. I normally use Perl, does anyone now if there is a perl module that will automatically do this prefix aggregation? I tried to write my code to do this, and its not trivial, just lookinh for a shortcurt. I did a breif glance at some CIDR related Perl cpan modules, and nothing has jumped out. Thanks John

The recent thread on CIDR aggregation cleanup scripts reminds me that I'm looking for a similarly efficient implementation of a related tool. (I'm gearing up to write my own in Perl, but don't want to reinvent the wheel.) I'd like a fast, Unix-pipeline-ready tool that *replaces* all IPs within that range with a supplied string, using a simple config file as input, and ideally with autodetection of IP-address "word" boundaries, as in: $ cat cidr-replace.cfg 105.170.75.0/24|[Unitel] 209.112.128.0/18|[ACS] 209.165.128.0/18|[GCI] 192.0.2.0/24|[TEST-NET-1] 198.51.100.0/24|[TEST-NET-2] 203.0.113.0/24|[TEST-NET-3] $ echo "source,data1,data2,209.112.130.2,data3" | cidr-replace cidr-replace.cfg source,data1,data2,[ACS],data3 And I know this is kludgy, but it would also be useful for quick-and-dirty work if it had a flag to "append" the string using a known delimiter, as in: $ echo "source,data1,data2,209.112.130.2,data3" | cidr-replace --append ',' cidr-replace.cfg source,data1,data2,209.112.130.2,[ACS],data3 (But I'm happy to hack that last functionality into an existing script.) -- Royce

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this yet, but Telstra is hijacking a lot of prefixes: https://rpki.cloudflare.com/?view=bgp&prefix=&asn=1221&validState=Invalid Since we don't have RPKI filtering in our network (yet), we are currently filtering everything with the path ".* 4637 1221$". This is of course taking a while...
