Quite timely too, as home connectivity is needed more than ever. Highlights: - location: just outside of Ann Arbor - no fixed broadband since 2002 -> build own network - pre-wire neighbors with fiber drops and feed them off WISP first - lots of work to sign up customers, having to resort to snailmail to reach all - 70% of homes passed signed up - Have ASN, get IPv6 and IPv4 allocation, multihome and connect to local IXP - purchase equipment: fusion splicer, OTDR, materials, directional drill(!) - hire contractors, deal with all manner of problems, theft, stop work orders, unbudgeted costs, unmarked/badly marked utilities, hitting (own) utilities - build own fiber blower(!) for blowing in fiber in ducts - splice, OTDR, resplice, schedule installs ... which don't always go to plan - Upstream very helpful, offered a Cisco 6500 as CPE, however respectfuly declined and went with Arista - Link up! Network is now live with 17 subscribers hooked up. More waiting to be connected - Mixed Active Ethernet and GPON - latency drops from 30 ms to 8 ms, bandwidth from 20-30M to 730M, total commit 1.5G on 10G port, plans from 50M to 500M - SPAM! IPv4 brokers and the usual unsolicited contacts from bottom of the baller IP transit providers - Costs: $126k in 2020, $95k contractors, $32k materials and equipment. Total outlay ~$150k + years of sweat equity. Important to spread out costs over longer period of time to be able to afford. Offset costs by using pre-pay model (Can pay $5,000 up-front and receive $50 credit for 100 months) All in all it was an excellent presentation. I only wish Jared had spent some more time on how he had to become a telco and how this got him better access to the public right of way. Of course, some more details on his directional boring and some nice video of him running the drill would have been a cherry on top :) I'd like to congratulate Jared on lighting up his network and wish him success in running it. I did a similar build almost twenty years ago and regret I didn't have the forethought to document the effort better then. DoD IP Space

Hi Guys, Except for the email on ARIN's details, does anyone else have a contact for the DoD? We are experiencing a situation with a 3rd party (direct peer), wanting to advertise DoD address space to us, and we need to confirm whether they are allowed to do so or not. Apple Catalina Appears to Introduce Massive Jitter

Hi all. I've been on High Sierra for several years now due to a limitation with an app that couldn't deal with Apple's latest rounds of system permissions since Mojave. Eventually, I gave up on waiting for them to fix it and upgraded my older Butterfly keyboard laptop to Catalina 4 weeks ago. At the same time, I picked up the new Magic keyboard laptop 2 weeks ago which came with Catalina. Over the past week, I've been troubleshooting a massive jitter issue on Catalina, just between itself and my home router. For control, I have a Windows PC (tower-top) using a wireless adapter to connect to my home network. That has no jitter at all. I have noticed as much as 300ms+ jitter on Catalina. I then asked a few friends around the world to run tests for me on their own Catalina installations to their local router over wi-fi, and the results are the same. Jitter so high that what should be a 1ms - 5ms latency can (for a short period) jump to 200ms+, 300ms+, 400ms+. On the off-chance that it is an issue with the new wireless chips on the later MacBook models, one of my friends tested the same on a 2013 MacBook Pro running a beta version of Big Sur. Same story! Another friend in South East Asia, testing on a 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro running Catalina, also had the same issue. A Google search suggests that this is some known issue since Mojave, to do with Location Services, and some other apps, in a non-deterministic way: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/263638/macbook-pro-experiencing-p… For me, even after disabling all or some Location Services features, the problem remains. Is anyone else seeing this on their Catalina Mac's while on wi-fi? If so, does anyone know what's going on here? Ideally, this wouldn't matter if it was just a cosmetic issue - but I do actually see physical impact to performance of network access to/from the laptop, which has all the hallmarks of high jitter and/or packet loss. An app like Zoom, which can display network performance data for a session in real-time, does indicate nominal packet loss for audio and video on this device, while other devices on the same WLAN are happy. IRR Explorer Error/Issue

Hello everyone, There seems to an issue with IRR Explorer. I check the following prefix and I get the message, “The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there is an error in the application.” http://irrexplorer.nlnog.net/search/216.71.119.0/24 I am also seeing ARIN records are not updating on IRR Explorer. That prefix should show the ASN under ARIN for the ARIN IRR route that is registered. We are also advertising the prefix and which being advertised by Hurricane, but IRR Explorer does not see the route advertised by BGP. Ingress filtering on transits, peers, and IX ports

We recently received an email notice from a group of security researchers who are looking at the feasibility of attacks using spoofed traffic. Their methodology, in broad strokes, was to send traffic to our DNS servers with a source IP that looked like it came from our network. Their attacks were successful, and they included a summary of what they found. So this message has started an internal conversation on what traffic we should be filtering and how. This security test was not about BCP 38 for ingress traffic from our customers, nor was it about BGP ingress filtering. This tested our ingress filtering from the rest of the Internet. It seems to me like we should be filtering traffic with spoofed IPs on our transit, IX, and peering links. I have done this filtering in the enterprise world extensively, and it's very helpful to keep out bad traffic. BCP 84 also discusses ingress filtering for SP's briefly and seems to advocate for it. We have about 15 IP blocks allocated to us. With a network as small as ours, I chose to go with a static ACL approach to start the conversation. I crafted a static ACL, blocking all ingress traffic sourced from any of our assigned IP ranges. I made sure to include: * Permit entries for P-t-P WAN subnets on peering links * Permit entries for IP assignments to customers running multi-homed BGP * The "permit ipv4 any any" at the end :) The questions I wanted to ask the SP community are: * What traffic filtering do you do on your transits, on IX ports, and your direct peering links? * How is it accomplished? Through static ACL or some flavor of uRPF? * If you use static ACLs, what is the administrative overhead like? What makes it easy or difficult to update? * How did you test your filters when they were implemented? Thanks a lot, -Brian
