Getting an ASN in ARIN

FYI - Suspension of Cogent access to ARIN Whois

ARIN has repeatedly informed Cogent that their use of the ARIN Whois for solicitation is contrary to the terms of use and that they must stop. Despite ARIN’s multiple written demands to Cogent to cease these prohibited activities, ARIN has continued to receive complaints from registrants that Cogent continues to engage in these prohibited solicitation activities. For this reason, ARIN has suspended Cogent Communications’ use of ARIN’s Whois database effective today and continuing for a period of six months. For additional details please refer to https://www.arin.net/vault/about_us/corp_docs/20200106_whois_tos_violation.… ARIN will restore Cogent’s access to the Whois database at an earlier time if Cogent meets certain conditions, including instructing its sales personnel not to engage in the prohibited solicitation activities. Given the otherwise general availability of ARIN Whois, it is quite possible that Cogent personnel may evade the suspension via various means and continue their solicitation. If that does occur, please inform us (via compliance(a)arin.net<mailto:compliance@arin.net>), as ARIN is prepared to extend the suspension and/or bring appropriate legal action. GPS Sync Outage

Greetings, This email is a response to https://mailman.nanog.org/pipermail/nanog/2020-January/105058.html in which Forrest discussed GPS time sync issues today. The galmon.eu project also monitors GPS, and one thing we found is that at 20:39:47 UTC today, which is near 2PM MST, GPS PRN 29 emitted a clock update that is pretty weird. The 't0c' is the t=0 of the clock correction parameters and it went backwards by 16 seconds, and it introduced a 5.9 nanosecond clock jump. https://www.politico.com/news/2019/12/25/california-power-shutoffs-089678 This article details some of the issues with California's "new reality" of planned blackouts. One of the big things that came to light with these blackouts is that our network infrastructure's resilience is pretty lacking. While I was (surprisingly to me) ok with my DSL connection out in the boonies, lots and lots of people with cable weren't so lucky. And I'm not sure how bad the situation is with cellular infrastructure, but I assume it's not much better than cable. And I wouldn't doubt that other DSL deployments go dark when power is down. I have no clue with fiber. So I guess what I'm wondering is what can we do about this? What should we do about this? These days IP access is not just convenience, it's the way we go about our lives, just like electricity itself. At base, it seems to me that network operators should be required to keep the lights on in blackouts just like POTS operators do now. If I have power to light my modem or charge in my phone, I should be able to get onto the net. That seems like table stakes. One of the things we learned also is that the blackouts seem to last between 2-3 days apiece. I happen to have a generator since I'm out in the boonies and our power gets cut regularly because of snow, but not everyone has that luxury. I kind of want to think that my router+modem use about 20 watts, so powering it up would take about 1.5kwh for 3 days. a quick google look shows that I'd probably need to shell out $500 or so for a battery of that capacity, and that's doesn't include your phones, laptops, tv's, etc power needs. What does that mean? That is a major expense for a lot of people. On the bright side, I hear that power generator companies stocks have gone through the roof. On the dark side, this is probably coming to a lot more states and countries due to climate change. Australia. Sigh. Mike

This thread has devolved into "Why 5G"? A lot of folks are missing the bigger picture. 5G is not for better voice calls. AFAICT, it won't help voice at all. 5G is not for better integration with WiFi or IP data. 5G is to *replace* WiFi, and FTTH, and ISPs, and WISPs, and bring all data back to the telco. ATT really misses owning the network monopoly. 5G is also about upstaging Amazon and Google and other data center providers. Read up on "Edge Computing". The "edge" isn't in your network or your customers' internal networks. The edge is a telco data center. That's what they mean by "reducing latency": moving your data processing into a telco data center means it is topologically closer to a cell tower. 5G is mostly about getting more unregulated data-related fees. --- History lesson: When I designed CDMA IS-99 (circa 1993-95), IP data was sent over the Operations and Management (O&M) interface. You could do voice simultaneous with data. Every original CDMA cell tower had an IP router in it. Our initial implementation significantly out-performed ATT's CDPD. I'm also the original author of Mobile IP, and the first implementer. IS-99 gave easy and fast IP roaming between interconnected cell towers. Turns out, the big telcos didn't like this model. In fact, they really didn't like a distributed traffic model at all. They wanted to centralize and monetize access to data, which they viewed as a value-added service, because they could bypass regulators and charge whatever the market could bear. Voice was regulated. Data was not. More money was to be made. Same issues, 25 years later....

Hello Everyone, I know we are very late in the game however, I need the community's help. As our company continues to grow and establish long term relationships and bringing additional customers onto our infrastructure, we find ourselves desperately needing to reserve a /24. I understand that IPv4 addresses are getting depleted as of 2015, can someone on here please guide us on how to best secure /24? Thank You in Advance, Terrance
