Hi, Do folks on this list see blockchain technology making inroads into the networking? I can see blockchain being used to secure the SDN environment where blockchain will allow encrypted data transfers between nodes (ones hosting different applications, the SDN controller, the data plane devices) regardless of the network size or its geographical distribution. Where else can blockchain be used in networking? Glen.

MTU to CDN's

Hi, N00b here trying to understand why certain CDN's such as Cloudfare have issues where my MTU is low. For instance if I am using pptp and the MTU is at 1300 it wont work. If I increase to 1478 it may or may not work. TIA.

Dear Nanogers, By now, I'm pretty that the community has heard that china is planning to increase (once again) filtering measures by limiting ports 80 / 443 / 8080 : https://www.reddit.com/r/China/comments/7opv4f/china_to_block_sdwan_and_vpn… https://www.goldenfrog.com/blog/article-claims-china-block-vpns-causing-con… https://www.sd-wan-experts.com/blog/china-stops-sd-wans-cold-register/ https://www.networkworld.com/article/3247705/sd-wan/will-china-start-blocki… I've been doing some googling (read above) and I have come to the following conclusions : - Only clear thing is that a "commercial" ISP can register with CN gov to lift that filtering ? - This should be enforced by Feb, 1st. - Pretty much all the rest is unclear when it comes to the : who ? what ? how ? I'm trying to understand exactly what we might be dealing with here. Do anyone happen to have a clear view on this ? Are some of you already affected by this ? Thank you for your feedbacks. I don't mind letting the client premises routers break down 9000 byte packets. My ISP controls end to end connectivity. 80% of people even let our techs change settings on their computer, this would allow me to give ~5% increase in speeds, and less network congestion for end users for a one time $60 service many people would want. It's also where the internet should be heading... Not to beat a dead horse(re:ipv6 ) but why hasn't the entire internet just moved to 9000(or 9600 L2) byte MTU? It was created for the jump to gigabit... That's 4 orders of magnitude ago. The internet backbone shouldn't be shuffling around 1500byte packets at 1tbps. That means if you want to layer 3 that data, you need a router capable of more than half a billion packets/s forwarding capacity. On the other hand, with even just a 9000 byte MTU, TCP/IP overhead is reduced 6 fold, and forwarding capacity needs just 100 or so mpps capacity. Routers that forward at that rate are found for less than $2k. The Latin American and Caribbean Peering Forum LACPF-2018 will be held in Panama City, Panama on the April 30th, 2018. The goal of the LACPF is to promote and provide collaboration spaces in topics related to interconnection and peering, IXPs, CDNs, transport capacity, and colo facilities among others. >From this edition, the LACPF will change to the more know format that other Peering Forums have. The event will be a day long, the first half for talks and presentations and the second half for work and negotiation sessions. The LACPF-2018 Program Committee invites the Internet community to submit their presentations for the event. How do i remotely connect to an ix? In the en. speaking caribbean we have probably six to eight small national ixps. I want to be present at all of them, & its been suggested i can make some cost savings by remote connection using mpls. Is this a viable option? Is there a disadvantage in doing this? Thx. Rudi

New bill out today as part of a larger set of broadband infrastructure bills, the result of some of the NANOG community's conversations with House staffers (and likely other 3rd parties influence): H.R. ____, “Promoting Exchanges for Enhanced Routing of Information So Networks are Great (PEERING) Act,” sponsored by Representative Billy Long (MO-07) • Internet Exchanges (or peering centers) are the physical locations where networks come together, and where content providers cache content closer to end users to increase speed and efficiency of networks. • The bill would authorize a matching a grant program through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to promote peering centers where none exist, or to help an existing one expand if it is the only such facility in a core-based statistical area. • The bill would also authorize eligible recipients under the Universal Service Fund’s E-Rate program (schools and libraries) and Telehealth program to use such funds to contract with a broadband provider to obtain a connection to a peering facility, or to pay costs of maintaining a point of presence at a peering facility.
