100G - Whitebox

I first sent to an IX-specific mailing list, but as I have yet to see the message hit the list, I figured I would post it here as well. We've had multiple requests for 100G interfaces (instead of Nx10G) and no one seems to care about the 40G interfaces we have available. Looking at cost effective options brings us to whitebox switches. Obviously there's a wide range of hardware vendors and there are a few OSes available as well. Cumulus seems to be the market leader, while IPinFusion seems to be the most feature-rich. We're not doing any automation on the switches at this time, so it would still need decent manual configuration. It wouldn't need a Cisco-centric CLI as we're quite comfortable managing standard Linux-type config files. We're not going all-in on some overlay either given that we wouldn't be replacing our entire infrastructure, only supplementing it where we need 100G. I know that LINX has gone IPinfusion. What OS would be appropriate for our usage? I'm not finding many good comparisons of the OSes out there. I'm assuming any of them would work, but there may be gotchas that a "cheapest that meets requirements" doesn't quite unveil. Any particular hardware platforms to go towards or avoid? Broadcom Tomahawk seems to be quite popular with varying control planes. LINX went Edgecore, which was on my list given my experience with other Accton brands. Fiberstore has a switch where they actually publish the pricing vs. a bunch of mystery. Hi, Does anyone know if there's fibre resiliency between Calgary and Toronto over the Great lakes, I thinking redundancy could be achieved by using two paths one following the railroad and the other following the Trans-Canadian highway. What's the point of prepend communities?

Hi, Of all the ISPs that I am familiar with that have a BGP community structure usable by their peering partners and/or downstream customers, among other things, they allow the customer to signal the ISP to prepend their own AS to the as-path of a particular prefix announcement. What functionality does a provider prepend support that is otherwise lost in the absence of such a feature, but all the while, the customer would be able to prepend their own AS to the same prefix announcement anyway? Is this a relic from before ISPs allowed for local preference adjustment, or is there actually a use case for this? Thanks!

Physical Layer fiber Software Tools?

I am hoping someone could help me out with some suggestions for any software that is available, for individuals that are doing physical layer wiring in a data center? The idea is the technician is performing the fiber runs from say RACK 111 router AAA port 1/1/1 to RACK 222 router BBB port 1/1/1 The fiber is connected to a LIU in the TOP of the rack, and then will require various cross connects to get to the other rack. If the various racks and LIU's are pre-populated into the software, and then a standard for the fiber labels is also installed ahead of time into the software tool. The technician has a tablet or laptop to enter the data, and then it will print out a cable label based on the info entered into the tool. The back-end data base is updated for each fiber so the complete path is known. This way its a one step process. Maybe my description of this is readily available or have other companies developed a custom software tool to achieve this? Appreciate any feedback.

Ping a Comcast Business DNS Admin?

I'm hoping a Comcast engineer can clear something up for me: If I recall correctly siteprotect.com is used by Comcast Business hosting. We have a mutual customer who has their domain NS pointed at ADNS.CS.SITEPROTECT.COM and BDNS.CS.SITEPROTECT.COM and those servers resolve their domain properly, but as of two weeks ago I no longer have the option to edit the customer's zone when signing in to businessclass.comcast.net. Phone reps have said "we don't manage you DNS" or "NetSol is their registrar", or even "Hmm...you're right, there's something wrong, but I don't know what's going on". On top of all of that, Comcast told this mutual customer to update their DNS records because they are being migrated to Office 365. But the customer can't access it to edit it.
