Hi, a friend of mine mentioned he wants to migrate away from carrier grade equipment such as Juniper and Cisco to open source hardware. Both of us haven't been able to find anything that would fulfill the requirements that a smallish ISP might have. Does anybody here have any advise? 10gbps peering subscriber switch recommendation

Good morning, We're in the market to move our IX peering off of our core (too much BGP/CPU :-/ ) and onto a dedicated switch. Anybody have a recommendation on a switch that can do the following without costing a fortune? I have scoured Cisco, and bang for the buck is ... ASR9k (way over powered for handling zero-feature IX traffic), 3-8x 10gbps ports 64k routes minimum, preferably 128k Must be able to speak BGP Native/functional IPv6 would be sharp! Basic QoS to police our ports The prefix count seems to be the killer, as our exchange table is getting pretty big (42k+ currently). I'm really tempted to build a vyatta box or similar, but would rather do something off the shelf -- especially if it can be 1-2 gens old and cost effective. I'm certain that this same situation is scratching many other folks as exchanges become more important. Thanks for your input in advance -- stay warm! Randal

EIGRP support !Cisco

Looking for EIGRP support in a platform other than Cisco. Since it was opened up last year. We have a situation where we need to integrate into a network running EIGRP and would like to avoid cisco if at all possible. Any thoughts? Nick Olsen Network Operations (855) FLSPEED x106

Completely agree. But this is needed to integrate into an existing network. OSPF would've been my first choice. Both are fully vendor neutral, and they both support mpls networks properly. EIGRP has some interesting features, but the vendor tie-in cost is way too high to even consider using it. IGP migration is quite do-able, even for large networks, and all cisco devices which speak EIGRP will also speak at least ospf, if not isis. Nick

We at SOX (Serbian Open eXchange www.sox.rs) use a combination of Extreme Networks Summit X650 (24x10G), and CISCO 4948E-E (4x10G+48xGEth), and recently added Vyatta with 2xIntel 82599ES dual 10G NIC, built on HPDL180G6 with 2xE5620 Xeon, and for route servers we use 2 additional HP servers running Quagga. Both Extreme, CISCO, and Vyatta could speak BGP, and do the routing, but we prefer CISCO to do the routing, as well as aggregation of GEth customers, VLAN translation etc. Vyatta works like a charm, but in very limited rule, routing what CISCO could not handle due to limitation in number of prefixes. Routing in Extreme is very expensive due to high price of Core license which is required for routing features. ipdeny.com provided a highly useful service: IP address allocations on a per-country basis. The site's still live but all (or nearly all) the data files are empty. The blog hasn't been updated, and email via their contact form goes unanswered. I'd like to know if anybody here has a clue as to what happened, why, whether they'll be back, etc. Thanks, ---rsk

Vyatta to VyOS

Many here might be interested, In response to Brocade not giving the community edition of Vyatta much attention recently, some of the more active community members have created a fork of the GPL code used in Vyatta. It's called VyOS, and yesterday they released 1.0. http://vyos.net/ I've been playing with the development builds and it seems to be every bit as stable as the Vyatta releases. Call for Presentations - DNS-OARC Spring Workshop, May 2014 Next OARC Spring Workshop will take place in Warsaw, Poland on May 10th and 11th, the weekend before RIPE68. OARC is requesting proposals for presentations, with a preference for DNS privacy and confidentiality work and ideas, and DNS over alternative (non UDP) transports. This workshop continues OARC's tradition of having meetings include a strong operational component. Presentations from DNS operators are particularly welcome. We'll also gladly accept talks from DNS researchers, as well as any other DNS-related subjects such as tools, visualizations and data analysis. If you are an OARC member, and have a sensitive topic you would like to present for members-only, we will accommodate those talks too. Adopting practice from other conferences, a section of lightning talks will be added for short presentations.
