Hi, It seems that today is a "big day" for IPv6. It is the very first time when native IPv6 on google statistics (http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/statistics.html) reached 1%. Some might say it is tremendous success after 16 years of deploying IPv6 :-) T.

How are you doing DHCPv6 ?

I am wondering how people out there are using DHCPv6 to handle assigning prefixes to end users. We have a requirement for it to be a redundant server that is centrally located. DHCPv6 will be relayed from each customer access segment. We have been looking at using ISC dhcpd, as that is what we use for v4. However, it currently does not support any redundancy. It also does not do very much useful logging for DHCPv6 requests. Certainly not enough to keep track of users and devices. So, my questions are: How are you doing DHCPv6 with Prefix Delegation? What software are you using? Blocking private AS

I am thinking about implementing a filter to block all traffic with private AS numbers in the path. I see quite a few in my table though so I am concerned I might block some legitimate traffic. In some cases, these are just prefixes with the private appended to the end but a few have the private as a transit. Is this a good idea or would I likely be blocking too much legitimate traffic? Network topology

Hi all I'm considering trying to come up with some means to automatically detect a networks topology and draw pretty pictures. This is somewhat boring though if a network isn't well arranged with VLANs and q-tag trunk routers and so on (It will just look like a big cloud of junk connected off an assumed switch). Is there any kind of cunning trick to detect standard layer2 switches along a path without stuff like STP?

What are y'all doing for CALEA compliance?

What are you RENs out there doing for CALEA compliance? Is there actually any teeth to the law? Our systems guys have tried a product called 'Open CALEA' but the router and the server simply can't keep up with mirroring from a 10Gbps connection into a 1Gbps link. I'm no legal expert either....any lawyers on this list? Thanks for all the great advice. This is a great community! -ben

Inventory and workflow management systems

What software solution do people use for inventory management for things like riser/conduit drawdown, fiber inventory, physical topology store, CLR/DLR, x-connect, contracts, port inventory, etc. Any experiences in integrating workflow into those packages for work orders, modeling, drawdown levels, etc. /vijay

Quad-A records in Network Solutions ?

Hello all, I just received a heads-up from a friend telling me that Network Solutions is unable/unwilling to configure AAAA's for .com/.net domains. He works for a large media outlet who will be enabling IPv6 on their sites for World IPv6 Launch Day. I hope it's just a misunderstanding. If it's not, I would love to know if there is a reason for this, and if they have a timeline for supporting AAAA's. It's ok to contact me privately. regards Carlos

Why are there no GeoDNS solutions anywhere in sight?

Dear NANOG@, Not every operator has the ability to setup their own anycast. Not every operator is big enough to be paying 25 USD/month for a managed GeoDNS solution, just to get their hands on GeoDNS. (Hey, for 25$/mo, I might as well have an extra POP or two!) Why so many years after the concept has been introduced and has been found useful, can one not setup GeoDNS in under 5 minutes on one's own infrastructure, or use GeoDNS from any of the plentiful free or complementary DNS solutions that are offered by providers like he.net, xname.org, linode.com and others? I'm an NSD3 user and have a POP in Europe and NA, and, frankly, the easiest (and only) solution I see right now is, on both servers, running two copies of `nsd` on distinct sockets, and redirecting incoming DNS traffic through a firewall based on IPv4 /8 address allocation (RIPE and AfriNIC -- to an `nsd` instance with zone files with an `A` record of a POP in Europe; ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC and the rest of /8 allocations -- an `A` record for NA), with zone replication managed through git. Yeap, it's rough, and quite ugly, and unmaintainable, and will give optimal results only in 80 to 95 per cent of actual cases, and will not benefit from the extra webapp redundancy one otherwise might have had, but what other alternatives could be configured in 5 or 15 minutes? Any plans to make DNS itself GeoDNS-friendly? When editing a zone file in `emacs`, why can one not say that one has 3 web servers -- Europe, NA, Asia -- and have the dns infrastructure and/or the web-browser figure out the rest? Why even stop there: all modern browsers usually know the exact location of the user, often with street-level accuracy. It should be possible to say that you have a server in Fremont, CA and Toronto, ON or Beauharnois, QC, and automatically have all East Coast users go to Toronto, and West Coast to Fremont. Why is there no way to do any of this? Cheers, Constantine.
