How are you doing DHCPv6 ?

I am wondering how people out there are using DHCPv6 to handle assigning prefixes to end users. We have a requirement for it to be a redundant server that is centrally located. DHCPv6 will be relayed from each customer access segment. We have been looking at using ISC dhcpd, as that is what we use for v4. However, it currently does not support any redundancy. It also does not do very much useful logging for DHCPv6 requests. Certainly not enough to keep track of users and devices. So, my questions are: How are you doing DHCPv6 with Prefix Delegation? What software are you using? Blocking private AS

I am thinking about implementing a filter to block all traffic with private AS numbers in the path. I see quite a few in my table though so I am concerned I might block some legitimate traffic. In some cases, these are just prefixes with the private appended to the end but a few have the private as a transit. Is this a good idea or would I likely be blocking too much legitimate traffic? Network topology

Hi all I'm considering trying to come up with some means to automatically detect a networks topology and draw pretty pictures. This is somewhat boring though if a network isn't well arranged with VLANs and q-tag trunk routers and so on (It will just look like a big cloud of junk connected off an assumed switch). Is there any kind of cunning trick to detect standard layer2 switches along a path without stuff like STP?

Quad-A records in Network Solutions ?

Hello all, I just received a heads-up from a friend telling me that Network Solutions is unable/unwilling to configure AAAA's for .com/.net domains. He works for a large media outlet who will be enabling IPv6 on their sites for World IPv6 Launch Day. I hope it's just a misunderstanding. If it's not, I would love to know if there is a reason for this, and if they have a timeline for supporting AAAA's. It's ok to contact me privately. regards Carlos

Verizon FiOS - is BGP an option?

All: I realize this might be a bit of a fool's errand, but I'm trying to determine if Verizon will speak BGP with FiOS business customers. Their website is relatively lean on details. Everything that mentions BGP points to VZB services, which does not appear to include FiOS. Looking at the routing table, I do see several non-VZ ASNs downstream of AS19262, so it looks like it might be possible. If that is the case, could anyone lend any insight to get past the "what is BGP?" response that likely awaits from their salescritters? jms

Questions about anycasting setup

Hello everyone. I am working on creating a small anycasting based setup with 3-4 servers in US. Plan is to use this for DNS and later for CDN setups. I have few confusions in mind and was wondering if you guys here can put some light on them: 1. For anycasting does announcing a /24 from different ASNs (of different datacenters) makes sense or it will be an issue to have a block being announced from different ASNs and I should avoid and prefer having own router below datacenters network and eventually use one single ASN to announce the anycasting block? 2. We plan to use this anycasting based setup for DNS during initial few months. Assuming low traffic for DNS say ~10Mbps on average (on 100Mbps port) and transit from just single network (datacenter itself) - is this setup OK for simple software based BGP like Quagga or Bird? Certainly colocating routers will be slow & expensive. Does it offer any direct advantage in such simple setups? 3. IPv6! - I am looking at possibility of having support of IPv6 in anycast right from start. Can't really find a good prefix size for anycasting announcement. I can see Hurricane Electric as well as Google using whole /32 block for IPv6. So is /32 is standard? We have only one /32 allocation from ARIN and thus if using /32 seems like hard deal - we have to likely get another /32 just for anycasting? or we can use /48 without issues? Also, is /48 a good number for breaking /32 so that we can do /48 announcements from different datacenters in simple uni casting setup? I apologize for any wrong questions/logic - really new to this.
