How are you doing DHCPv6 ?

I am wondering how people out there are using DHCPv6 to handle assigning prefixes to end users. We have a requirement for it to be a redundant server that is centrally located. DHCPv6 will be relayed from each customer access segment. We have been looking at using ISC dhcpd, as that is what we use for v4. However, it currently does not support any redundancy. It also does not do very much useful logging for DHCPv6 requests. Certainly not enough to keep track of users and devices. So, my questions are: How are you doing DHCPv6 with Prefix Delegation? What software are you using? Blocking private AS

I am thinking about implementing a filter to block all traffic with private AS numbers in the path. I see quite a few in my table though so I am concerned I might block some legitimate traffic. In some cases, these are just prefixes with the private appended to the end but a few have the private as a transit. Is this a good idea or would I likely be blocking too much legitimate traffic? Network topology

Hi all I'm considering trying to come up with some means to automatically detect a networks topology and draw pretty pictures. This is somewhat boring though if a network isn't well arranged with VLANs and q-tag trunk routers and so on (It will just look like a big cloud of junk connected off an assumed switch). Is there any kind of cunning trick to detect standard layer2 switches along a path without stuff like STP?

Inventory and workflow management systems

What software solution do people use for inventory management for things like riser/conduit drawdown, fiber inventory, physical topology store, CLR/DLR, x-connect, contracts, port inventory, etc. Any experiences in integrating workflow into those packages for work orders, modeling, drawdown levels, etc. /vijay

Quad-A records in Network Solutions ?

Hello all, I just received a heads-up from a friend telling me that Network Solutions is unable/unwilling to configure AAAA's for .com/.net domains. He works for a large media outlet who will be enabling IPv6 on their sites for World IPv6 Launch Day. I hope it's just a misunderstanding. If it's not, I would love to know if there is a reason for this, and if they have a timeline for supporting AAAA's. It's ok to contact me privately. regards Carlos

HSRP vs VRRP for IPv6 on IOS-XE - rekindling an old flame

A while back I brought up a discussion about IPv6 and I mentioned having some HSRP issues. Not end of the world, just adjusting to IPv6. Several folks went offline to tell me that I should dump "legacy" HSRP and go to VRRP. While I never did find anyone who could explain how HSRP is a sunset feature in IOS, I did agree with a few folks to look into VRRP for IPv6. Well I'm just now getting around to it and there is literally nothing out there. I found a few older articles implying that it's not there yet and of course I found the usual docs about RAs and SLAC and whatnot. But nothing recent. So, for those who criticized me previously about using HSRP (or anyone else) instead of VRRP, do you have VRRP up and running on Cisco IOS-XE and if so how? Can anyone provide a link or a document explaining how this is accomplished? Sample configs? Usually if you can't find it on Google or CCO it's not promising. I'm also reaching out to our AS team for guidance on the subject. PS: I'm not taunting here. It's just that several folks made the effort to go offline with me and tell me how wrong I was with HSRP and that I need to progress to VRRP and I can't find a single doc on the subject now that I look. Look into Static route retain. Should keep the route in the forwarding table. >From Jniper site <<< Route Retention By default, static routes are not retained in the forwarding table when the routing process shuts down. When the routing process starts up again, any routes configured as static routes must be added to the forwarding table again. To avoid this latency, routes can be flagged as retain, so that they are kept in the forwarding table even after the routing process shuts down. 1310nm optics over Corning LEAF G.655?

Anyone run 1000BASE-LX/10GBASE-LR 1310nm optics over a ~10km Corning LEAF G.655 span? I understand this fiber is not optimized for such usage, but what is the real-world behaviour? I'm having a hard time finding hard data. (Normal optics will be 1550nm and DWDM over ~40-100km spans.) -- Tim:>
