Can anyone point me to useful recent studies showing the ratio of downstream to upstream traffic loading for a typical home Internet user? Broken out by traffic type would be really nice but not holding my breath. Thanks, -Donner

I think is would be short term. The home user is not going to continuously upload data. They will do an initial sync, then incrementals. People are doing this today with success. This is not a new thing. Hey all, I've been thinking about the impact that iCloud (by Apple) will have on the Internet. My guess is that 99% of consumer internet access is Asymmetrical (DSL, Cable, wireless, etc) and iCloud when launched will 'upload' obscene amounts of gigs of music, tv, backups, email, photos, documents/data and so on to their data centres. Now, don't misunderstand me, I love the concept of iCloud, as I do DropBox, but from an Access Providers perspective, I'm thinking this might be a 'bad thing'. From what I can see there are some key issues: * Users with plans that count upload and download together. * The speed of Asymmetric tail technology such as DSL * The design of access provider backhaul (from DSLAM to core) metrics * The design of some transit metrics So basically the potential issue is that a large residential provider could have thousands of users connect to iCloud, their connections slowed because of uploading data, burning their included bandwidth caps, slowing down the backhaul segment of the network, and as residential providers are mostly download, some purchase transit from their upstreams in an symmetric fashion. Hey folks... I know a couple of folks behind this new site and thought it would be worthwhile for the NANOG community to be made aware of it. http://www.serviceproviderworld.com/ It's basically going to be a directory of service providers across the world - that's the plan as I understand it. End-users can visit and review their service providers etc. Personally, I think this is a great concept - I've seen some online directories of providers and most of them are either entirely Canada based or US based and in my opinion not that great. Please bear in mind that this site is literally getting started - there is an email link I found at the bottom of the site where you can email the group for assistance/questions/feedback. Hello All, I was hired by the Russian ISP company to get it back to the business. Due to impact of the financial crisis, the company was almost bankrupt, but then found the investor and have a big wish to life again. When I tried to announce it's networks, upstreams rejected to accept it because of Spamhaus listings. But our employer sworn there is not and was not any spamming from the company. The Spamhaus lists all our networks as spamming Zombies. And it IS announced and used now!!! The announce is from American based company Internap (AS12182). I wrote the abuse report them, but instead of stop unauthorized announces of our networks, I was contacted by a person named 'Michael Lindsay' - he tell me he buy our networks from some other people and demand we get back our abuse reports. Of course, we don't. After a short googling, I found this is well-known cyber crime person: http://www.spamhaus.org/rokso/listing.lasso?file=818&skip=0, and he did IP hijacking with the fake letter of authorization before: http://www.spamhaus.org/rokso/evidence.lasso?rokso_id=ROK8686 so our company is not a first victim of him. Yes, our company "help" him with the mistake of loosing old domain link-telecom.biz he was also squatted. This domain was listed as contact at RIPE Database. It is a good topic why these easy-to-forge LOAs is still in use, as RADB/RIPE DB/other routing database with the password access is a common thing. But this is not the main thing. The main thing is why Internap helps to commit a crime to the well-known felony person, and completely ignores our requests? Is there any way to push them to stop doing that immediately? If anybody can - please help...

[Semi-OT] - SIP/PRI Voice Origination & LNP for Jackson, MO

Hi there, Casting a large net here ... any Ops on this list that has an already established interconnect or resell services agreement with the folling CLECs? Jackson, MO is apparently a black hole and I can't get any ratecenters for LNP with Level3/GBLX/Paetec, so our normal SIP Origination channels are no good. Here are the companies that apparently can handle LNP and Originate for Jackson. ** SBC/AT&T - While we can get PRIs and/or their IP Flex, they won't allow us to port numbers in that aren't ours - ie. we can't become a reseller. ** Charter Fiberlink - Not getting anywhere with them. No good sales contact info that has a clue. Anyone have a good sales contact? ** Big River Telephone - initially sounded interested in selling us their services, but won't return my follow up calls. Maybe we too small of a fish or maybe they dont like the competition? ** Teleport Communications Group - Not getting anywhere with them. No good sales contact info that has a clue. Anyone have a good sales contact? What we need ... to be able to LNP 573-204 and 573-243 and have the inbound calls come to us, either via SIP or a NxPRI there at our remote POP in Jackson. To start, we're looking to LNP about 300 to 400 numbers and have about 50 concurrent calls. This will be ramping up ... I would appreciate any and all replies off-list please. Thanks! -graham

Digging noaa.gov at 4.2.2.1 returns what I expect. Interesting, too, that Firefox 5.0 wouldn't DTRT, even though 4.2.2.1-3 were the backup nameservers in my resolv.conf.
