Did Internap lose all clue?

Recently I was contacted by an Internap sales person. The third line of the email read: "As you know well, BGP makes all routing decisions simply based on HOP COUNT" I blinked my eyes a couple of times.. Yes it really said hop count. Then I replied to the guy that if he tries to sell a technical product to technical people he should get his info straight. But he replied BGP actually makes decisions based on hop count. He even sent an URL from the internap website that states this http://www.internap.com/it-iq/route-optimization-miro/ On that page there is also this gem: "BGP relies on the premise that hops are responsible for packet loss and congestion, and therefore a route with fewer hops is inherently better. " I can imagine blatant misinformation like this from a shady startup trying to trick some sales with smoke and mirrors, but from Internap? -- Bas

Motorola GPON deployments

Hello NANOG, We are currently in the process of rolling out a Motorola GPON solution and running into some hiccups and wanted to see if we were doing something unique or if anyone else has run into the issue and we just haven't found the right solution. Our configuration has the OLTs using single tagged VLANs down to each customer ONT, rather than using Q in Q connections. This VLAN is shared among all customers that terminate at a single site, which may have 1-2 OLTs sharing that same VLAN. This VLAN is then carried back via switching to our core equipment which handles routing. We have noticed that malfunctioning customer equipment have generated loops on the network which has caused unusual forwarding problems in the OLT, and many of the ONTs we are in the process of deploying, 1400GTI, don't include the ability to detect these loops. If anyone wants more information feel free to follow up with me off list. We are hoping we aren't the only ones attempting this and can find a sane solution to the issue. Hi! We're currently evaluating web hosting providers in the APAC region and one of the criteria that we are currently considering is the availability of routes going to the web hosting provider. In this regard, I would like to ask for your idea regarding this. Is it safe to conclude that the web hosting provider's available routes would would depend on the peers who are advertising their AS / network? (i.e if web hosting provider claims that they are peering with telco a, b, c but as seen from a third party looking glass, only C is seen advertising the web hosting provider network that would mean web hosting provider is effectively utilizing c as their upstream??)
