Multi-homed implementation and BGP convergence time

Hello - my company currently has two connections with a single tier 1 ISP. We are using the AS from our ISP at this time. In the next month we will be implementing a third connection with a second tier 1 ISP, so we will now be using our own AS number on all three routers. My question is when we implement the new connection and update our existing connections to use are own AS number, how much downtime will there be? So far the second ISP has only said that it could be hours for BGP to fully converge. We are looking for more detail about how long the outage will be and how widespread. Will it be relatively short to our customers that are on one of the ISPs we are directly connected to? Is downtime less for customers on other tier 1 ISPs versus tier 2, etc. ISPs? We will only be receiving a default route on each of the three connections. Our routers will be advertising a small number of routes - 6 to 8. Thank you. Andy Claybaugh

cross connect reliability

All, Today I had yet another cross-connect fail at our colo provider. From memory, this is the 6th cross-connect to fail while in service, in 4yrs and recently there was a bad SFP on their end as well. This seemes like a high failure rate to me. When I asked about the high failure rate, they said that they run a lot of cables and there is a lot of jiggling and wiggling... lots of chances to get bent out of whack from activity near my patches and cables. Until a few years ago my time was spent mostly in single tenant data centers, and it may be true that we made fewer cabling changes and made less of a ruckus when cabling... but this still seems like a pretty high failure rate at the colo. I am curious; what do you expect the average reliability of your FastE or GigE copper cross-connects at a colo? Thanks, Mike -- ************************************************************ Michael J. I don't know if you want to arbitrarily use local-pref and AS-Path prepend in a one-size-fits-all approach, as under certain scenarios it might be more beneficial to route traffic between POPs to take advantage of routes via shortest AS Path or other constraints. Why not just extend your IGP across all POPs and set inter-POP links to a higher metric? In this scenario, if a given route is received via muliple POPs and all things being equal (AS Path, etc.), you'll prefer to route traffic out the shortest-cost path to a POP exit point. FOSS WAN Acceleration Software

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had experience or could recommend free open source WAN Accelerators/Optimizers. There seems to be only one FOSS project called TrafficSqueezer but development has stopped and the project is still in an Alpha stage. I am not interested in the offerings of Cisco (WAAS) or Riverbed (StealHead) or any other appliance based solution. Thank-you in advance for any and all replies. -- BH

Cross-posted from cisco-nsp. We are a (mostly) Cisco shop, but I'm looking more for BCP and overall design, not provisioning specifics. ----- My Cisco bookshelf isn't helping me much with this... We currently have a single POP with border/core/aggregation topology. Upstreams each come in on their own border router and the core is used as a route-reflector for border and aggregation. The internal network uses OSPF as an IGP and each device is dual-connected for redundancy on independent layer-2 networks.
