Request for help here. We have a business partner who, like us, provides DSL services to residential and small-business customers in the US Rocky Mountain region. They just got a /20 from ARIN and were intending to renumber into it in the next week or so, but apparently it used to belong to a company in Chile. Symptoms after a morning of testing: 1) www.google.com is in Spanish 2) Web pages are slow - am assuming this is due to folks like Akamai sending them to content caches in Chile though I haven't tested it myself... God knows "web pages are slow" isn't particularly specific but I'm assuming an OC-3 with 3 DSL subscribers on it will be reasonably free of congestion and I know the upstream is competent. 3) End-user unable to complete an online e-commerce transaction due to a fraud-prevention service thinking he was a Chilean user trying to buy something with a US-based credit card. Can't be the first time this has happened. Anyone have suggestions or experience with this? I assume it'll eventually resolve - at least for 98% of sites/issues - but don't know whether "eventually" means "tomorrow" or "in a couple of years" or what they can do to accelerate the process. -Robert Tarrall.- Director of Technology E.Central/Neighborhood Link

I am fairly new user of nanog mail list so I am not sure if the question below is appropriate for this list. If not, please excuse it. - I am building a new low-budget customer WAN/LAN network and need some ideas for network management tools. I've seen couple of email threads regarding all sort of "net goodies". However, since I haven't used them all, I am not sure which OS would be the most appropriate for these aps? Can anyone share their ideas in regards of apps and supporting platforms? I would be most comfortable with free distribution of linux, but I am not sure which distro supports most of the tools? Is the paid OS required for all these tools, like RedHat Server or SuSe or Windows platforms? Thanks much, Vitto

Things I'd look at would be RANCID, Cricket + genrtrconfig, Cacti, jffnms, mon from kernel.org, Nagios, ZenOSS, OpenNMS and my own NMS, Observer (http://www.observer.org) You'll find lots of help with all of these tools from the mailling lists and forums related to them. IPv6 routing /48s

Are there any parties out there routing /48 IPv6 networks globally? I ran into a supposed Catch-22 with Verizon and IPv6 address space and was looking for clarification. We have been delegated a /48 by ARIN. We then went out to procure a native IPv6 T1 from Verizon (*mainly for testing*). We requested that Verizon route the /48 that we were provided by ARIN. Verizon's response was "they do not route network smaller than a /32". Fair enough... capacity planning for all the /48's would give a router a headache with today's hardware... so we requested address delegated from Verizon's larger block of addresses to be used for addressing. The response was that we could not receive new address space until we returned our ARIN provided address space... so in effect, go back and get a /32 from ARIN or give up on ever owning address space again. ARIN claims they are seeing /48s routed, at least in their route tables. I have seen some new momentum on the allocation of /32's, don't know if that is in response to rules like this?? Would be awefully difficult for our organization to come up with the rationale to need 65K /48s internally to justify a /32. revo

These buildings host computer equipment that provide the massive computational power, data storage, and global networking that is integral to modern information technology. The concentration of densely packed computer equipment in data centers leads to power demands that are much higher than those of a typical residence or commercial office building. Data centers typically consume 15 times more energy per square foot than a typical office building and, in some cases, may be 100 times more energy intensive (Greenberg et al. 2003). Nationally, data centers consumed 61 Terawatt hours in 2006; equivalent to the practical power generation of more than 10, 1 Gigawatt nuclear power plants (Brown et al., 2007). This research project focused on identifying how data centers are currently designed and exploring potential energy saving associated with alternative building design options. The energy savings were quantified to understand when design changes resulted in significant benefits and when the benefits from alternative designs were minimal. The potential energy savings benefits were juxtaposed against changes to the environmental conditions in data centers and evaluated within the context of computer reliability concerns. The objective of this research is to provide data center designers and other decision makers with a better understanding of the benefits and concerns associated with data center energy efficiency, thereby reducing the unknown consequences that may hinder attempts to shift away from conventional design practices.
