<hat org="NANOG Program Committee" role="Chair"> NANOG45 will be held in the middle of the North American Winter in beautiful Santo Domingo in the Dominican republic on January 25-28. http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog45/ This is the first time that a NANOG has been held outside of the US or Canada and everyone involved is excited about the opportunity. It's just like Toronto in February (which was actually fantastic) but it's the Caribbean in January. :-) The Call for Presentations is already up: http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog45/callforpresent.php Presentations can be submitted at [4]http://www.nanogpc.org/ (please ignore the references to NANOG44--we'll change those references over to NANOG45 at the close of the NANOG44 conference). If you have a good idea for a presentation but need some feedback or some help developing it, please contact me and I'll be happy to either work directly with you or find someone else on the program committee to help you put together a presentation. contracts and survivability of telecom sector

This evening I looked over the telecom companies that are my suppliers, or who supply my suppliers, etc. I noticed that all of them, including Level3 (stock symbol LVLT) have a lot of debt (finance.yahoo.com numbers): Company Name | Cash | Debt ATT | 1.63B | 80.13B Level3 | 666M | 6.84B Verizon | 2.07B | 43.11B Cogent | 129M | 330M Obviously there are other, important numbers and ratios, but I won't go into that here. As you know, there are supposedly huge problems with companies, even top-rated ones, in borrowing from the usual channels. If you assume for example, that Verizon has notes of 10-year terms, then (if the notes are spread evenly) they will need to borrow some $4Billion in the next 12 months. If the terms are a lot shorter, then the amount to borrow goes up significantly of course... My question: Are there any recommendations from an operational perspective, should one or more of these or other telecom companies have such problems? My belief at the moment, is that the risk is low, as operations will always continue running even during bankruptcies (as some may have already seen with other companies). I am not interested in financial prognostications, I am solely focused on operational issues that might affect e.g. connectivity. Cordially Patrick Giagnocavo patrick(a)zill.net

NANOG44 lightning talk -- submission open

<hat org="NANOG Program Committee" role="Chair"> NANOG44 is fast approaching and I hope to see many of you in LA this weekend and next week. As many of you know, Lightning talks are an important part of NANOG. They are short talks, often topical or late-breaking, accepted just prior to or at the conference. Total time is 10 minutes, including questions. Lightning talks are a perfect opportunity to add something topical to the program, or get feedback on preliminary work that is not ready for a full half-hour presentation yet. Lightning talks can be sumbitted at: https://www.nanogpc.org/lightning/ using your nanogpc.org speaker account. The only thing required is a compelling abstract and the willingness to put together some slides at the last second. Could I get a godaddy mail admin to contact me off list? Ive been working with a client who has a hosted website and mail services and lost the ability to communicate with their SMTP server about 6 weeks ago. Been through about 4 hours on the phone with Godaddy Support and Comcast.
