NANOG 42 Peering BOF XVII and APRICOT 2008 Peering Forum

Hi all - In about a month (starting Feb 17 specifically) there will be two back-to-back events specifically for network engineers and peering coordinators; at NANOG 42, Feb 19, we will have the 17th Peering BOF (http://www.nanog.org/mtg-0802/agenda.html) and the following week, at APRICOT 2008, Feb 25-26 there will be an AP Peering Forum (http://www.apricot2008.net/P09.html#t1) held in Taipei, Taiwan. I need volunteer speakers and topics for both of these, and if you are a network operations person, I bet you might have a story to share with the group ! I'm looking for stories of interest to the peering community, such as: What processes did you use to transition an upgrade to your network? What worked well and what did not? What did you wish you knew when you built into and throughout different regions or countries? How did you select these locations (transport, transit, peering costs? attractive market? customers?) What was unexpected, or what lessons learned would you share with folks who would walk in your footprints? (technical, business, ops, legal, etc.) How did you decide which countries to build into, and what were the hidden costs and snafus? Basically, anything you would like to hear or would like to have heard would be appropriate. I have 45 minutes left to fill in the NANOG Peering BOF and a lot of time left for the APRICOT Peering Forum. If you can share your experiences on these or other topics at either or both of these forums, please send me a note ASAP. Also, we will once again have the Peering Personals at the Peering BOF and at the APRICOT Peering Forum, providing a chance for peering coordinators to introduce themselves to the group, describe their network and the types of networks they would like to peer with. Microsoft's Black Tuesday bandwidth impact?

Every month I look at my upstream bandwidth graphs and I see no blip in the hours before 3 am on Microsoft's Black Tuesday. I would think that with the thousands of PCs out on our network downloading updates around that time that I would see *something*. I know every Black Tuesday I see my three PC's blinking a logon screen. Are MSFT's monthly updates really a non-event in regards to internet bandwidth? Frank

It's funny that you ask. The organization I am working with that spawned this question in the first place has /22 dhcp pools at multiple sites-- for both VoIP and workstations. "For future growth..." they said. Why the decision was made not to scale with additional VLANs at a later date is beyond me(or my pay-grade). They thought it was preposterous that I suggested that there are a lot of providers/networks that exclude .0 and .255 host addresses from DHCP pools/etc, and do not use them as a matter of convention/best practice. I casually suggested this fact and was subsequently chided. The reason I posed this question in the first place, is that in my experience, most organizations I have worked with do not use them. It appears from the thread that there are some legitimate concerns with using .0 and .255 hosts, even though many consider these concerns dated or legacy. Thanks to everyone for their opinions. I'm not aware of any modern cable modems that operate at 10 Mbps. Not that they couldn't set it at that speed, but AFAIK, they're all 10/100 ports.
