Hey all, This seems a wee bit off topic, but definitely relates to network operations (somewhere below layer 1) and I can't think of a better place to ask. Upon leaving a router at telx and asking one of their techs to plug in the equipment for me, I came back to find all my cat5 cables neatly tied with some sort of waxed twine, using an interesting looping knot pattern that repeated every six inches or so using a single piece of string. For some reason, I found this trick really cool. I have tried googling for the method, (it's apparently standard, I've seen it in play elsewhere), and for the type of twine, but had little luck. Hey, was discussing something from the long distant past recently. Specifically it was my memory of the last legitimate spamhaus, and how (IIRC) their backbone was DDoS'd as an act of pseudo-vigilante justice. I also seem to remember their backbone as spinning it as a content-neutral free-speech kind of thing, but they buckled and the Internet was probably better off. This isn't the kind of thing where one can make an easy google query, but I'll bet you that someone here remembers a name that would lead to a URL that I could forward to the person asking for more info. But to start with, just solving the data storage problem is a good place to start. If someone can create a specialized network monitoring database that scales, then the rest of the toolkit will be much easier to deal with. Note that people have done a lot of research on this sort of time-series database. People working in high-energy physics also have to deal with massive sets of time-series data. There is plenty of literature out there to help guide a design effort. But Open-Source developers don't usually do this kind of up-front research before starting coding. After all, it is consistent with the goals of the original IP designers to address every light switch and toaster. Just remember, IP addresses are *NOT* Internet addresses. wifi for 600, alex

Hi list, I just read over: http://www.nanog.org/mtg-0302/ppt/joel.pdf because I am on the PyCon ( http://us.pycon.org ) team and last year the hotel supplied wifi for the 600 attendees was a disaster (they probably were not expecting every single one to have and use a laptop the whole time). Joel's pdf was for a conference in 2002 or 3, so I am hoping much has changed. But from what I have found, I think my hopes may be just a dream. Does anyone have any advice or URLs of more recent case studdies in supplying wifi for 600 laptop wielding geeks? bear with me, this appears to be about DNS but it's actually about e-mail. maps.vix.com has been gone since 1999 or so. mail-abuse.org is the new thing. i've tried just about everything to get traffic toward the old domain name to stop... right now there's a DNAME but it made no real difference. i've taken the maps.vix.com domain away. i've set its NS to "localhost". i've put long TTL's on both good and bad data. the traffic continues. clearly this is my pennance for starting MAPS, and i hear you giggling about it, but i need some advice. once upon a time, someone more insane than myself wanted to close an RBL and did so by replacing it with a wildcard entry. we all hated that since it caused a lot of mail to bounce. (all mail that would otherwise have been received by that RBL's subscribers, in fact.) it did however have the effect of causing the subscribers to reconfigure their mailers to stop querying the now-dead RBL in question. what's the current thinking on this? oh and even though this isn't about bgp i can put some numbers in so that it will seem on-topic. out of 100K DNS queries received by a vix.com nameserver (which is about five minutes worth), here are the toptalkers for maps.vix.com. Best way to supply colo customer with specific provider

Hello all, Being relatively new to the colocation business, we run into a fair number of issues that we've never run into before. Got a new one today, and although I can think of kludgey ways to accomplish what he wants, I'd rather get some other ideas first... We just had our first customer that's requesting bandwidth exclusively through a particular provider of ours (Cogent) at less expensive pricing. The money people here are up for it, but obviously, they want to make sure that he's confined to that Cogent connection. So now of course we're attempting to figure out the best way to do this, and I figured that rather than reinventing the wheel, I'd check to see how others accomplish things like this. The way I can imagine doing it is by using route-maps to steer all of this customer's traffic out the Cogent pipe, and modifying our BGP announcements by AS prepending on whatever block or blocks we set aside to be "Cogent-exclusive". Again though, this seems to me to lack a certain amount of, for lack of a better word, "grace". Any other suggestions? Thanks, Rick Kunkel

Birmingham UK colocation

I have two racks in London UK. The colocation is currently in London. The contract is up soon and most of the feet on the ground in the UK of the company is in the greater Birmingham area. So I'm interested in colocating about two racks of servers to Birmingham. I would need a cage if the space were shared. What is peering like in the Birmingham area? Will getting multiple provider feeds in Birmingham be possible? It was easy in London. And can anyone recommend colocation in Birmingham? The alternative is stick with London (in spite of difficulty for remote hands) so any suggestions on excellent colocation in London? Google search for "Birmingham UK colocation" only useably yeilds "F1 colocation" and "easy net".
